  • confused about cheese?

Hi all , I've recently restarted Atkins after a 4 year layoff (and a 3 stone put on) :-[

    Now i'm confused about cheese?

Not only as part of induction but also the next phases

my dilema is its widely said that 1oz of cheese equates to 1gm of carb

now when i look at my cheese packet the 100grms which is around 3.5 oz

    equals 0.1 gm carb

thats a tenth of whats stated?

    see my problem

    ok packet reads per 100gms

    energy 416cal
    protein 25.4 gm
    "carb" 0.1 gm
    of which sugars 0.1 gm
    fat 34.9 gm
    of which satur 21.7gm
    fibre nil
    sodium 0.7gm

so can i eat more than 115gms of my chedder or not?

    thanks for reading

    Hammy

    Welcome back to Atkins!

No, you cannot eat more cheese. Cheese is limited during Induction to 3-4 oz.

Cream cheese has about 1 carb per ounce, for example. Dr. Atkins' advice to count 1 oz of cheese as 1 net carb is, as he calls it, a "rule of thumb".

AS your question has been well answered already, Hammy I wanted just to welcome you to our international ADBB family

From the label info you posted I am assuming you are in UK?!?
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

                yes UK

Well i spose i was getting the whole carb intake system for induction wrong with the cheese thing. As it seems its not the amount of carb but cheese as a whole. See i told you im confused.

I'm hoping i stick with it again as atkins worked great for me last time but life style for me changed dramaticly when i moved here to wales from England and i do look back and think i was happiest on atkins than i was before and after starting my lowcarb life.

Although id say that my exercise is almost none existant except for walking the dogs as i have a lower back problem but am determined to walk more and do my pilates. So fingers crossed.

I dont know how to do all these stat things etc but i know from last time that 14 to 15 stone for me is my fighting weight and im now 17.5 so a way to go.

Which also brings up the bmi and ideal weight thing, lol they say at 6'1" im supposed to be 12 stone 8 pounds well there is no way i could be that and look healthy so the 15 stone is my marker.

                sorry i rambled

look forward to joining in the chat.

                cheers

                Hammy

                  Re: confused about cheese?

BMI is absolutely stupid. If you read why it was used, because it was easy to calculate, you start to see why it is flawed. You can also have two 200-pound men. One a body builder with little body fat and one with just fat and the BMI says they are both obese. Body fat% is more useful but often the results are inaccurate.

I really like the website below for determining ideal weight. It gives you the BMI and the BMI-based ideal but it also gives you what others say is a good weight for the height.

For example, I am 5'7" and the BMI says I should be 132 to 165 which is not possible unless i remove all my muscle mass. The people choice is 196 which happened to be when I thought I looked the best.
