I'm not sure how you determined that you have a slow metabolism. In any case, if you ate less carbs than what your body needed (you likely haven't switched to ketosis/lipolysis with those cheats), then you would lose weight because your body's glycogen stores will go down and glycogen is stored with water. You would also lose weight if you ate less calories than your body burned.

I think you should read the book ("Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution", 2002) and, if you want to follow Atkins, follow it correctly. If you keep doing what you have been doing these four days (or two, whatever), you cannot expect to continue losing weight and you cannot say you are follow Atkins. And if you are not yet ready to commit to Atkins, then my suggestion would be to take some time off, read the book and come back on the plan when you are ready to make Atkins your new way of eating for life. This will save you a lot of frustration and will help you be successful when you finally decide to make the big step into Atkins Land.

You don't know if it affected you unless you did a clean Induction and "your Induction" exactly under the same conditions and compared your results. You can say you were happy with 17 lbs in 20 days, but saying that the cheats haven't affected your weight loss is not correct.

Re: Seven Pounds In Four Days

        This is my rant.

I have mixed emotions about these posts. Anyone passing by might think that this give them hope that our bodies forgive "cheats". Not always so. Just think back to the many posts from people struggling to figure out why they aren't losing weight simply because they drank on the weekend, they had a family event that had to be attended and while they were there, they had to consume foods not allowable under Atkins. And they had to do this to keep peace in the family because an Aunt would be upset if they refused her sugary treat.

This plan is more than following a list of food and losing 10 pounds before Halloween or meeting the family for a holiday. It is about putting yourself first, making up your mind you are worth it and not testing every premise that Dr. Atkins spells out in DANDR 2002. It is about finding a food plan that isn't just about another diet, but truly a plan to follow for life if you choose. If you don't mind "cheating" yourself, than try any plan out there, but don't cheat and then try to call it Atkins.

For many people on this board, it is more than about vanity pounds. It is serious for them, it is about health issues for them, it is about commitment for them, it is about actually reading DANDR 2002 and understanding how and why this plan works. They have the tools to be successful. Too many people try to dance on the pin of the needle and they fall off.

And if this seems harsh to some people ... frankly my dear ... I don't care.

Having said that ... to those who work hard, read DANDR 2002, have true goals, understand how hard it is for the majority of people to cull through all the information here, I applaud your efforts every day I read your posts. You are the people who help me every day, even now.

When you are alone in your head, you are in a bad neighborhood.

Re: Seven Pounds In Four Days

Why cheat? There's enough appetite suppressant effect when you're sticking to the foods on Atkins to NOT cheat. I think this diet does take a lot of discipline as far as planning (shopping, cooking, taking a breath to SIT DOWN and enjoy your food) and there's no need to WANT to cheat.

To Irish's rant, it's true. You don't have to go off the diet "just because". Sticking to it will reap rewards and if I can do it anyone can.

              Just my two cents hahha

I know it's hard to imagine, but some of us actually enjoy doing Atkins correctly and are not jealous on those cheating during Induction and losing X pounds.

Along the time, we had many members who at those going by the book, proud that they can lose weight without doing Atkins (or by cheating every other day, which is not Atkins). This is quite funny, because Atkins is not the only way to drop some pounds. Sure, Atkins is not only about dropping pounds, but that's another story that is well explained in DANDR, for those who wish to take the time to read the book.

But to at someone that you can cheat and still lose weight shows that you see staying on track and following Atkins correctly as some sort of punishment. That's not how eating healthy should be seen if you want to change your way of eating for life (which is what Atkins is --- a WOE for life), not only for two weeks or two months.

I am SO not mad that I'm finally following the diet correctly. There's always room for improvement, but just sayin'.

Congratulations! If you read the book, you'll find that half of that will be water weight - which totally counts! Part of the reason many people have big introductory losses on low-carb diets is that they are shedding retained water AND burning fat.

But, I cheated, and I cheated big. For two of the four days, I ate spaghetti and a taco and a chocolate bar, but still lost seven pounds fast, and Im a girl with a slow metabalism!!!! Will someone explain to me what my body is doing?
Many people think low carb = Atkins. It doesn't. There are many, many forms of low carb eating and many, many ways to lose weight with low carbs.

Nobody here is saying you're a bad person. Nobody is saying you can't eat exactly what you want. What we are saying is:

That is not Atkins. It may be a perfectly wonderful form of low carbing, it just isn't specifically Atkins low-carbing.

If you're cutting your carbs, that's a perfectly legitimate way to lose weight and if whatever you're doing works for you, rock on. But since Atkins Induction is about vastly lowering sugar intake for steady glucose levels and only getting carbs from specified sources:
                      • Chocolate = sugar = not Atkins.
                      • Spaghetti = carbs = not Atkins.
                      • Taco (shell and sauce) = carbs + sugar = not Atkins.

Does that make sense to you?

Another thing. Stuff such as grapes (you mentioned eating them in another thread) or spaghetti are perfectly legal for Atkins, just not for Atkins Induction. They should be added back during the appropriate OWL rung.

I've just logged in after months away from the plan. It's good to read that there are real people out there like me, struggling. Just arrived back in Australia from a holiday in Bali. The staple food there is rice or noodles. Moved house and found My Dr Atkins book. I have to find my scales etc but you are all there to inspire me. My girlfriend and I started Induction yesterday... Wish me luck Nettie from Australia
