Some college buddies and I are going to go visit the old alma mater in a few weeks, and every time we visit things tend to get a little crazy with the drinking... I will be there on what will be my day 15,16,and 17. Even when I was in college and drank a few times a week, I was a light weight. I RARELY drink now... so I figured I would only drink 3 maybe 4 max per night. I'm thinking I could drink Bacardi and Diet Coke because it has 0 carbs and 66 calories. How bad is drinking on the days right after induction.. and can I modify my eating to squeeze in room for these nights out with my buddies... we don't get to see each other that much.. and I want to have a blast!!!

You couldn't possibly suggest yourself as the designated driver, could you? That would allow you to not drink but still be accepted as one of the gang.
Or make out you were on antibiotics and so couldn't indulge?
Or just drink water with ice and a slice of lemon all night. Often people don't notice what you are having once they have had a few themselves. If you buy the first round no-one will know what you are having and after that maybe just ask the barstaff for 'more of the same'.
There are many reasons why you should not drink alcohol while on Atkins induction or the first stages of OWL apart from 'it is not allowed'.
Alcohol tends to cloud your food choice judgement - you are more likely to start nibbling bar snacks or going out for that carby meal when 'under the influence'. Many members here have posted that drinking alcohol caused them to fall off the Atkins way and it took a long time to get back.
You will probably find the alcohol affects you quicker - could turn you into a 'cheap date' with all that implies! Many people have posted that it only took a couple of drinks to get drunk instead of their former half a dozen.
And maybe more important from a weightloss aspect - your body will use the alcohol for fuel in preference to your fats/proteins/carbs so until it has exhasted that it will store them as (what else) FAT. This will delay your weightloss.
Once you reach the alcohol rung of OWL is the time to experiment and find out if your body can handle alcohol. :hugWondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Oh it's not the peer pressure I'm concerned about... it's just something my friends and I do every 4 or 5 months.. and I look forward to it because we NEVER see each other anymore.. (my old school is 300 miles away.. and all of my friends are 100+ miles away from me now) I want to go out and have a great time. There is NO DD for the night.. it's a college town so we walk everywhere! I fully expect to be 2-3 drinks one and done! I haven't had so much as a sip of alcohol since February.. and even then it wasn't much. I'm not worried about it clouding my food choices. When I was at school and I was low fat dieting.. my friends would always laugh at me because when they'd all be ordering pizza.. even at my drunkest I'd always make a salad or sandwich!! I'm just wondering if alcohol can knock me out of ketosis?22 years old 5'5.5

The problem with alcohol is that when you drink it,you quit burning fat and you burn the alcohol instead, so it will affect your weight loss, but once the alcohol is gone, you'll go back to burning fat. Dr A does let us have one serving of alcohol a day, and that like one beer or one mixed drink.
If I were you, I would really try to limit myself to that one drink, and then switch to water. Also be very careful of what the mixers are. Fruit juice is a nono, as are colas with sugar. Check DANDR and read up on alcohol.
Have a great time.

I'd only drink Bacardi and Diet Coke... 0 carbs 66 cal a serving. As soon as the weekend is out I'll go back to rarely drinking again... I'm just making sure one weekend of drinking isn't going to put 15lbs on me

Na it souldn't add any weight to you, well some folks find that alcohol does cause them to retain water.
If you were still in induction I would say stay away, but you said it would be day 15. The first 2 weeks are critical to do a clean induction, but then after that, its time to move on anyway.

I went to an event and landed up having a few glasses of red wine. I did then land up craving sweet things - and I managed to stay away from all those bad things. I did feel a bit ill the next day - but went right back onto the plan - it didn't effect my lose - but I won't continue drinking during induction.

As stated earlier, no alcohol is allowed during Induction--whether it's day 2 of Induction or month 4 of an extended Induction. Alcohol, according to DANDR 2002, is added during the On-Going Weight Loss phase. Interestingly enough is that in the last book written by Dr. Atkins, Atkins For Life, alcohol is not even on the OWL carbohydrate ladder.~Megs~

<Sigh> This is only in reference to the last post before this.... If you read my post.. it says I'm in Day 15.. and I'm planning to move to OWL on Day 15... I'm not drinking during induction... I'm not planning on doing extended induction unless I've still got 15+ lbs to lose.. which would require me now to GAIN weight over the next 10 days. I'm in great shape and don't have much weight to drop off.. just a little layer of fat over the muscle... There is no way that I'm not drinking a drop of alcohol for 4 months. I don't plan on kicking back and chugging every weekend, but I'm spending ONE weekend with friends that I almost never see AFTER my induction period.. regardless of which book says what, I'm going to go drinking with them.. because I know it's an isolated incident... all I wanted to know if was if it would knock me out of ketosis... which was kindly answered to me already.... As far as understanding which Rung to put alcohol in my diet... I'm not looking to put it back in as a staple... just 3 days with my friends... even if I gained a few from it.. it wouldn't really bother me.. I just wanted to make sure my body didn't go into some weird cycle where it caused me to gain MORE than I'd lost... which again.. a lot of kind people DID explain to me wouldn't happen. Make no mistake.. I don't mind my size now... I'm a nice size 8.. I'd just like to have a more lean and toned physique because of my job..22 years old 5'5.5

It's very apparent from your earlier post that you are determined to drink alcohol no matter what. That's your decision and you have obviously decided to take whatever consequences may happen.Originally posted by alexisirene<Sigh> This is only in reference to the last post before this.... My comments are directed towards the others in this forum who might get the idea that alcohol is added back into the diet during Extended Induction or as the first food added during OWL. Or who might get the idea that Dr. Atkins was giving us a load of BS when he wrote Induction Rule #5 "Eat nothing that is not on the acceptable foods list. And that means absolutely nothing! Your "just this one taste won't hurt" rathionalization is the kiss of failure during this phase of Atkins."
As the forums description says, the 14 day forum is "by the book".

Oh I understand that the 14 day is my the book.. I'm folllowing the induction rules by the book and I'm not taking a sip of alcohol during the first 14 days... I haven't had alcohol in months.. I think you're mis understanding what I said.. I'm not trying to work Alcohol into my diet in OWL... I'm not a drinker anymore because my job rarely allows me nights off to drink. I'm actually a bartender at a nightclub Downtown Chicago.. I didn't JUST stop drinking because of Atkins. I haven't drank in months because I work during normal social drinking hours. Some of my co workers drink at work.. but I prefer to stay sober. I just want this weekend with my friends because who knows when we'll all be able to meet again with people getting married.. moving to different states.. ect. Bottom line.. I'm not trying to be a big drinker on Atkins. I HAVE read the book and DO understand why that would not work. I just asked if drinking 3 Bacardi and Diet Colas a night for 3 nights the day AFTER induction might throw me out of ketosis. Come that Sunday morning.. I go back to not drinking again. Please do not make me seem as if I am irresponsible to my diet for wanting to go enjoy 3 days with my friends who were like sisters to me. I think I am in a different position than most on this board in that when I started this diet, I was at a perfectly healthy weight and size.. so my motivation and way of looking at things might be slightly different. Again though, please do not make me seem as if I'm not as dedicated for my goal as the next person because I asked how much of something (that is allowed in that stage) can I have. At least I took the time to post and ask, rather than posting the day I came home about how I feel horrible about myself for a binge on something I wasn't sure was ok. It's the pre planning and the instinct to question that shows how dedicated I am to my own success.22 years old 5'5.5

What Dr. Atkins says in the book is, of course, NO alcohol during induction, but when you're past it, he explains that alcohol will basically NOT make you GAIN weight, as you are afraid of, but that it WILL STOP weight loss until the energy from the alcohol is gone. So, in my opinion, you should be okay, if you're past induction, and you drink a Bacardi/Diet Coke, which is my favorite!!!! Now I'm wanting one! I'll be okay, though...I'm 26 years old, and I lost weight on this plan in 2005. I'm getting married in August and thought this would be the way to go after making little progress on other diets. I've got 20 lbs to lose for the big day!

The problem here is that the post was made in the induction forum. So as not to confuse anyone, drinking wine or spirits is not allowed until Rung 5 of OWL. I know...as it's my favorite rung and I was very happy to get there.
It's true that drinking will cease the fat burning until you have metabolized the alcohol completely....but it's not as though you are diving face first into an entire birthday cake. You will pack on plenty of water weight the next day or so though, so drink your water.
And if you wouldn't mind...just post this next time in the OWL forum. It just helps people not get confused.
Thanks, have fun, and be careful!100% Female - All Girl, all the time.

I'm not saying you're not as dedicated as the next person. You have made a decision to drink for 3 nights. No one here is going to convince you otherwise since your are determined to do so. The only thing we can do is tell you the hard facts: your body will metabolize the alcohol before it metabolizes fats, carbs and proteins. While your body is busy metabolizing the alcohol, it's storing the fats, carbs and proteins you are eating until it has a chance to use them. Your body will store these nutrients as glycogen and/or fat.Originally posted by alexisireneOh I understand that the 14 day is my the book.. As for knocking you out of ketosis, you might want to rely on the ketostix during this time to make sure you are still producing ketones. Well, that won't give you an accurate picture because the ketone body the ketostix tests for is chemically similar to a by-product of alcohol metabolism, so you can get a false positive result with the ketostix. You're best bet to monitor if alcohol will affect your progress is to see if you gain weight and/or inches.
What I think is happening here too is that you're under the impression that the chemistry behind Induction stops after day 14. It doesn't. Induction is there to lay down the foundation of weight loss and weight maintenance. When you move onto OWL, you are still in lipolysis/ketosis and you have to maintain that lipolysis/ketosis in order to continue losing weight. In fact, when some OWLers fall off the OWL wagon or go over their critical carbohydrate losing level and stop losing, they have to drop back into Induction to get back into the fat burning mode before they can continue with their OWL.

I have drank Bacardi and Diet, and the next day was still in ketosis... and i've had more than 1 drink by far. I think if you stick with it, and only indulge once in a great while, you will be fine. This is ONLY my experience though.... Yours may differ greatly.
P.s. As leslie said, you will definatly pack on the water weight... Usually comes off for me within 2 days. Have fun....Floyd
