I just started induction about 9 days ago and have lost 5 lbs. I've been really excited about my results but I had a little slip today. I ordered a cheeseburger with all the intentions of taking the sesame seed bun off but it was so nice and toasty looking that I ended up eating it with my burger! I want to get right back on track, do you think this will make me gain a lot of weight back? What kinds of foods would be best to help get my body back into ketosis? I've been reading DANDR but I haven't got to a part that says what to do when you cheat.

Re: I cheated
The best thing to do is to continue eating onplan as if you had not decided to eat 'illegal' foods for your Atkins phase.
Make the very next bite something onplan and you will minimise any 'damage' you have done.Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Next time, order it without the bun. There's no sense in ordering something you're deciding not to eat!
>>I haven't got to a part that says what to do when you cheat.>>
It's best not to cheat in the first place!
When you "cheat", you're putting your body back about a week ... and you're messing with your metabolism. If you cheat a lot, it's likely to take more time to recover ... and some people never do recover ... because it then becomes the "kiss of death".
Here's the deal ... you made a choice when you ate the bun ... it wasn't by accident!
The damage will come if you continue to make those kinds of choices.J.

Re: I cheated
The reason I didn't order the cheesburger without the bun is because I figured I would get some pretty crazy looks. I've ordered a cheeseburger before and discarded the bun, I just had a moment of weakness.
And the other comment I made about what to do "when" you cheat...I understand that cheating is not something that you should purposely be doing on atkins but sometimes things happen and I feel the fact that I jumped right back on at the first moment of weakness is a good thing. I never said that it was an accident that I ate the bun, I realize I made that choice. I think your response was a little rude. I was looking for some support, not someone telling me what I did wrong!

Re: I cheated
Chels, Eli is right - if you get back on plan with the very next bite of food, you will be just fine! More often than not, it's not the actual cheat food that does a person in... it's the way they react to the cheat. Meaning, they figure that since they've cheated during that one meal, they think the entire day is shot... so they indulge in dessert, late night snacks, etc. Then it is very hard to turn that carb train around... it becomes a very slippery slope.Originally posted by chels4144 View Postthank you! I plan on getting right back on track the next time I eat. hopefully the damage won't be too bad!
Figure out what made you slip, and arm yourself for the next temptation... because there WILL be another one.
Hang in there!

So what?
It's your money ... your food. That's the bottom line isn't it? If you want something a certain way, you have every right to ask for it.
>>sometimes things happen >>
How true. We all eat things we didn't intend to ... and that's not "cheating" ... that's inadvertent. You choose to eat the bun ...
>>I feel the fact that I jumped right back on at the first moment of weakness is a good thing>>
Yes, it is. For so many, that bun might have been the "kiss of death".
>>I was looking for some support>>
Support in having "cheated" or support in getting/being back on track?
That part you did well in. The rationalizing about the bun ... not so good.
Every time we eat on Atkins, we make a choice ... "falling off the wagon" is lurking at every opportunity ... so isn't important to make our decisions each and every time we eat?
Sorry you didn't feel "supported" ... it wasn't my intention. Just trying to give you some of my experience ... guess it didn't work out that way!J.

Re: I cheated
The reason I don't order without the bun is that the place I stop when on the road has a hard enough time getting regular orders right! What I do is before I sit down and get comfy is to immediately open the box and throw out the bun. Then I sit down and start fixing my side salad & cutting up the burger. Then, even if you have impure bun thoughts...too late! It's in the yucky trash.Originally posted by chels4144 View PostThe reason I didn't order the cheesburger without the bun is because I figured I would get some pretty crazy looks. Re: I cheated
Nice advice. I do the same sort of thing... don't give myself time to even think about it! It works... and the "feelgood" factor is terrific.Originally posted by mizski View PostThe reason I don't order without the bun is that the place I stop when on the road has a hard enough time getting regular orders right! Re: I cheated
I have to admit the toasted buns are something aren't they. I went to the Green Mill for lunch yesterday. I ordered the four cheese bacon burger... mmm it was so good. I by passed the fries of course and ordered a side salad.
So you know when they bring me the salad... I sit there and pick all of the crutons off. (why do I do that... why dont I just tell the girl that I dont want them...save them for someone else.) Then the burger it self comes and i smell it and see the toasty ness of it all... and I toss that to the side too. Hmmm why didnt I just tell the guy to keep the bun??? Doesn't it look just as weird to set it aside?
Either way it is a little strange... so the next time you order, if you feel that you can't even let the bun come to your table, ask them to hold the bun.
Have a great day Chelse and just get back on plan. You can do this, I know you can.How does one become a butterfly?

Re: I cheated
Thanks for all your advice and encouragement everyone. I am happy to say that I had some stir fry style pork with some cooked vegetables and a salad for dinner. When I weighed myself in the morning I saw that I had STILL LOST! I'm really glad I didn't just call it quits for the day, I think thats really what saved me!

Don't worry about crazy looks. There are many people who do not eat bread...some have wheat allergies, etc., and there are tons of people giving up carbs. Many restaurants even feature low carb options. I don't think anyone would give you a crazy look. These days nobody really cares what someone else is eating. Just hang in there!259/206/149

Re: I cheated
1 item of food will not cause you to gain pounds. The most it will do is stall you out because your body has those carbs to burn instead of the ones your supposed to have on induction. Do not worry about it just get back on that horse Cowgirl.. lolOriginally posted by chels4144 View PostI just started induction about 9 days ago and have lost 5 lbs. Re: I cheated
I think the best thing to figure out when cheating is what made you cheat in the first place, did stress set it off, maybe you were too hungry by the time you got to eat that it was just irresistable?
I think it is great that you are getting right back on track, don't dwell on the mistake, find the ways to avoid them in the future and think about now, you can't change what is done, I think you have a good attitude, you aren't giving up!
