I've been reading this site (found it after researching the Atkins diet) and on my 3rd day of Atkins, started at 250 and want to get down to 215 (215 -220 is a good weight for me, at 6 ft I know the tables will still have me overweight, but that is where I have maintained (and been) and I am happy there).
I'm 42, and this will be my 4th diet in my lifetime. Always had a large appetite but I guess exercising and a decent metabolism (jogging, basketball, raquetball, ect. (lotta golf but riding around in a cart drinking beer and eating hotdogs is probably not what they mean by excercising) has helped me not gain much weight in 20 yrs, till I got married in 01, wasn't used to having an extra chicken fried steak left (I hate leftovers, as well as waisting food), and having snacks (for my skinny stepchildren), quit excersising, and went from 210 to 240 quickly.
Here came my first diet (03), bought the Atkins book, lost 20 1st month, then got heat exhaustion (bad) out in the boat and everybody blamed it on the Atkins diet, so I quit.
2cd, Got a divorce in 06 (260 by then) and went on a low fat diet, running, lifting, came off fairly quickly, got back to 215 in a few months, stayed there until Jan 09, when I took a new job where I am working out of the house alot, by lunch, I'm ready to get out of the house, but not sit at a restaurant by myself, so between eating alot of Mcdonalds/Sonic/ ect. and grabbing the Doritos/Ice cream ect while making calls, I got to 255.
3rd, started low fat again, running more (I got lax this year) and lifting (havn't lifted since 06), really stayed lowfat and lost only 7 lbs in 45 days, I figured the lowfat is not going to work for me so I'm going to do Atkins for my 4th, and last.....
Staying away from soda (don't really like coke) and drinking lots of water (do that anyway) will be the easy part, along with the meats (I don't need a potato, fries), will be missing the burgers and the fajitas (just had a skirt steak and salad for dinner, gooood), well with the buns/tortillas, and chips/queso will be tough, but I'll make that.
The toughest part for me, and I'm going to sound like an alcoholic but I'm not even, is the no alcohol, but I'll make it, the few beers I drink on the weekends out Country Dancing and the scotch I drink after a round of golf is just gonna have to wait till Rung 5, we play poker every other Sat. night at my house and I cancelled the one tommorow, I think it will be tough to sit around a poker table w/out a scotch in my hand, maybe in two weeks (not that I can have one, but to be OK w/out one).
Also, I made a decision not to lift weights this time, I know its good for you, builds muscle which burns more fat, but...I do not enjoy it, knowing that lifting is part of my workout I do not look forward to my wo like I do a good run in the morning, so instead of lifting/running every other day, I'm going to run more, and when I get to where I want to be, I love to swim and will include that in my wo.
Anyway, lots of great info here. lots of good people that are interested in helping others, I have the book and I know I couldn't succeed with out it, but the informative posts really help almost as much as the book.
