  • lack of workout energy

    Hello,
I am on my 5th day of induction, doing well so far other than the fact that when I go to work out, I have very little energy. Has anyone else had this issue? I know in the book, it says that you will experience a surge of energy- I haven't had this yet. I'm a runner, so it feels like my legs are stumps when I try to run.

    Thanks.

    Re: lack of workout energy

I never experienced the "surge" of energy, but after two or three weeks my energy level "normalized".

It takes a little longer, typically 1-2 weeks, for the body to adapt to ketosis so that you can exercise like before (or better). If you check the part where Dr. Atkins is discussing carb loading in DANDR, he cites a paper that looks at exercise on a low carb diet. Stephen Phinney has also done a lot of research on the topic of exercise while LCing. This is a good interview with Eric Westman, Stephen Phinney and Jay Wortman: KGNU-How On Earth, Show: Exercise and Low Carb Diets (with Stephen Phinney)

Thanks! Also, as far as a multi- why does Dr. Atkin's mention one without iron? Mine has iron in it and was wondering if I should change it out.
This forum is wonderful- thanks for all your help.

Yes has to patient. It takes a bit of time of the body to use ketones as effectively.

Atkins felt that we get plenty of iron from our foods when we switch to low carb and since iron in one of the minerals that are not flushed out, he thought it was better that we did not add more iron in the supplements.
I personally find that I do not get enough iron through my food but I have high iron needs.

            Re: lack of workout energy

I eat a high fat meal such as (low carb) sausage, 2 slices bacon, 2-3 scrambled eggs with butter and double cream plus a couple of cherry tomatoes about an hour before I workout and I feel great. At one point the trainers at the gym told me to eat some low GI carbs before working out and I did try it for a couple of days and I had far less energy and really struggled with the workout. I can now do an hours aerobics or body conditioning class and then go straight into a 45-60 mins gym workout and still I have energy left.

You're only on day 5 and your body is still getting use to this WOE. Once you're body has adjusted to this WOE I'm sure you will find you have more energy.
