    Re: a few questions please

    Hi,

Here are some snacks that I eat:

Cream Cheese mixed with Rotel (Gene's Lava Dip) - eat with celery pork rinds, use like may on some lettuce leaves and put some meat (salami, turkey, or ham) and roll up.

Sour Cream mixed with Dry Ranch Dressing - dip with veggies, pork rinds

Salami and cream cheese - roll cream cheese in a piece of salami. It's sooo good!!!

No popcorn. It's corn. and starchy. It's healthy on a lowfat diet but this is the opposite of that. Cheers!

I rarely eat that much cheese. It would stuff me up.
I eat butter, oil, coconut oil, mayo, fat on/with protein

            I need snack ideas?

When/how do you know your in ketosis mode?
Not always easy to know. I can tell by appetite going down. Sometimes breath gets smelly or urine changes. And then there are the sticks to do the tests.

I am a little confused on tea...can I drink or can i not? I know it has to be decaffe. I have orange pekoe that is decafe, can I drink that?
You can have decaf tea and herbal tea. Check the ingredient list and count the carbs in them.

I refuse to eat salad dressing or anything like that, Can I eat mayo? I know ketchup is a no no and mustard is okay in little amounts but many say mayo is ok and some say no?
How come you refuse dressings. You can make your own if you are skeptical about store bought ones. They are easy to make. I usually use a bit of olive oil and vinegar for dressing when in induction. Olive oil is great to add to veggies to lower any bloodsugar effect they may have. Mayo is absolutely OK. (Check ingredients though. Use full fat.

No popcorn on the allowed list. Corn is a grain product and only allowed on Rung 9. But then you can have a bit.

pretty much it needs to be a food from that list, in moderation.
The Acceptable Foods List for Induction is from the Atkins website, and their info is different from that in DANDR 2002. At ADBB we go by DANDR 2002. For example, beets are not allowed during Induction, and avocado is not part of your Induction veggies, but a "Special Category" food (limited to 1/2 small one per day and comes with the warning that it may stall or slow down weight loss).

Boiled eggs with butter or heavy cream, deviled eggs, quiche, omelettes, frittata, chicken strips (no breading, of course) dipped in some mayo, tuna salad, salad with olive oil and vinegar, salad with salmon, mayo, fresh herbs and veggies (I add red onion and diced cucumber, and sometimes I mix mayo with creme fraiche), cream soups...

But you should not eat unless you are hungry or 6 hours have passed since your last meal. Try balancing your meals so that you don't eat your 4 oz of cheese all at once (or 4 oz every day, for that matter; just because we may eat 4 oz it does not mean we must) and you have fat, protein and some veggie carbs in all your meals.

              I need snack ideas?
This can be any food from the Acceptable Foods List. Any of the ones I wrote above would work as a snack (read: small meal, not mindless snacking in front of the computer/TV).

When/how do you know your in ketosis mode?
Most people need 2-4 days to get into ketosis. The physical signs of ketosis are reduced appetite, thirst, increased energy, different odor of your breath, sweat and/or urine, different taste in your mouth (some call it sweet, others say it's "metallic").

I am a little confused on tea...can I drink or can i not? I know it has to be decaffe. I have orange pekoe that is decafe, can I drink that?
Check the list of ingredients in tea. I have an issue with the "natural flavors" they use in tea, which give me blood sugar symptoms. So I make my own teas from cinnamon, ginger, sage, etc.

I refuse to eat salad dressing or anything like that, Can I eat mayo? I know ketchup is a no no and mustard is okay in little amounts but many say mayo is ok and some say no?
Mayo is allowed, but check the ingredients. Most mayos have some sugar added and that may cause problems for some people (from what I've seen at ADBB, many can eat it just fine... but I'm not among them, so I make my own from egg yolk, oil, lemon juice and whatever spices).

Thanks everyone. I will make my own dressings but I don't want to use the store bought ones because the sugar content in them.

Okay here is a stupid question...what is a pork rine?? Everyone talks of them but I don't think I have ever seen one. What is it??

                    Re: a few questions please

Deviled eggs - rolled deli meat with mayo or cream cheese - pepperoni chips (check the ingredients) - chicken salad, egg salad, roast beef spread (all homemade so you know what's in them) - any of the vegetables listed on the acceptable food list (this is the one from this site - NOT the Atkins board) http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html.

I cut radishes, zucchini, celery, cucumber and keep them in a baggie in the refrigerator - that way I can grab some, weigh them and eat if I need something quick - or for lunches.

I have no problem eating Hellman's mayo - I also buy Heinz Low Carb Ketchup and use it sparingly - mustard is good because it has nothing in it that isn't legal.

If you drink tea - even decaf - check your ingredients and make sure you drink a minimum of 64 ounces of pure water daily - so don't JUST drink tea.

The book says you can use salad dressings which have 2 carbs or less per serving - I use Ranch and Caesar dressings (very little sugar in either of these) - I've read where people use blue cheese and other dressings. There is no reason to eat dry salad when you don't have to - it's also a great way to get more fats into your daily meals.

Pork Rinds look like this - they are crunchy pieces of pork skin - make sure you watch the sodium content in the package you get.

That's right. Eating salads without some fat and protein is playing with fire, because you might get a blood sugar spike from those carbs. Fat and protein attenuate the effect.

For salad dressings, not only do they need to have not more than 2 carbs per serving, but also no sugar added.

Don't feel bad about it. The guys from atkins.com change the rules so often that it's all very confusing: you can eat two bars per day, don't eat bars during Induction, eat peas, don't eat peas, eat beets, don't eat beets, drink alcohol on Induction, don't...

As for giving advice, we all mess up sometimes. I have an issue with swede (OWL Rung 8 food, but I keep forgetting that). I think Liv corrected me twice on it.
