  • Monster Tabasco Slim Jim

I needed something quick today at the local convenience store. I had avoided my favorite Slim Jim while doing Atkins in the past, as I thought I read there was sugar in it in the past. I picked up one of the big ones today to take a look again, and it listed 3 gr carbs, 1 gram fibre and 0 sugar. Besides the soduim being high (I wouldn't eat them every day), sounds okay doesn't it?

I actually had two of those on a long road trip with no other options. I believe there is dextrose/sugar on the ingredient list, so it's technically not induction legal. That being said, with the size of the product and there being only 2 net carbs, the levels are insignificant. I have no shame in saying that in the grand scheme of things, I sometimes eat products with infinitesimal amounts of "sugar" in them. It keeps me sane (and on plan). That being said, everyone's mileage will vary and I don't recommend it as a complete way of eating because 'carb creep' can be very real for some folks.

This is the list of ingredients from amazon.com:
      Ingredients
Beef, Mechanically Separated Chicken, Water, Corn Syrup, Flavoring, less than 2% of: Salt, Dextrose, Vinegar, Paprika and Paprika Extractives, Sodium Tripolyphosphate, Tabasco(r) Brand Pepper Sauce (Distilled Vinegar, Red Pepper, Salt), Hydrolyzed Soy, Corn and Wheat Proteins, Lactic Acid Starter Culture, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Nitrite. Contains: Soy, Wheat
Corn syrup and dextrose are sugars. I wouldn't eat hydrolyzed soy, corn and wheat proteins either.

What about packing some cooked meat (like chicken breast strips) and having those with you when you need a quick snack? Or some cheese or a boiled egg. Would that work?

In OWL Rung 3, nuts are easy to carry around.

Ah, thanks for looking this up, G. You gotta love "mechanically separated chicken." Makes the dextrose and corn syrup look like nothing....

I agree with your recommendations for other snacks. I would never eat these concoctions as a planned snack. I found them in a convenience store in the middle of nowhere in the midst of a 3 hour ride. I looked for nuts, but most of them had sugars or other coatings on them.

Whenever I've looked at those types of snacks (jerky, slim jims) I recalled 2 or 3 carbs PER SERVING. I could never do anything but eat the whole package (3 or 4 servings) so I have to stay away from them (it's true I find it hard to control myself with certain foods!)

Me too. Surprisingly, this is 300 calories per stick (one serving). 27g of fat, 11 of it saturated. 11g of protein. 3g of carbs and <1 sugars, <1 fiber. 840 mg of sodium. Putting aside the fact that this product is about as processed and nasty you can get, the stats aren't half-Atkins bad (in a pinch).

You all are right, I had to get home and find my reading glasses to read the small ingredient list, lol. Lesson, carry the reading glasses in the purse for reading those tiny ingredient lables. Just proves my memory is better than my eyes these days, I should trust it more.
