  • Started induction yesterday

My wife and I started induction yesterday. Not so bad just yet. Of course I've never been a huge sweets person. But I do love my carbs...

Whipped up a pile of breakfast burritos on low-carb (5gr net) tortillas, eggs, green peppers, onion(less than 1-2 tablespoons per burrito) and sausage or bacon.

Lunch was an assortment of luncheon meats and a few slices of cheese.

Dinner was chicken saltimbocca, no breading, Just a thin sliced chicken breast, a slice of proscuitto, and about 1/2 cup of sage per 4 servings, I also made a quick butter sauce in the pan with a cup of reduced white wine.

Anything jump out as a big no-no??? I feel like I should have more fat in that menu.

I/We are attempting to follow Atkins/2002 if that helps....

    Thanks

    Re: Started induction yesterday

    Welcome!

Wine (or any alcohol) isn't allowed on Induction.

Neither is a low carb tortilla!

Your best bet is to follow the Rules of Induction in Chapter 11 of your book ... and to eat ONLY from the List of Acceptable Foods in that same chapter.

      Re: Started induction yesterday

For the wine, I understood it to mean that wine with alcohol is permitted as long as the alcohol is cooked away......

I also assumed that as long as I stayed within the desired carb range I would be ok with the tortillas.....

      Crap.

Well I suppose it's better to run into this in the beginning than 2 weeks from now.

      Thanks

.......I think I now have a bunch of burrito shaped tortilla cups for my egg/sausage mixture. I can't bring myself to dismantling them and frankly they weren't that tasty anyways....

          >>For the wine, I understood it to mean that wine with alcohol is permitted as long as the alcohol is cooked away......>>

First off, all the alcohol does NOT burn away, so you're still getting some alcohol, which isn't permitted on Induction.

          >> I also assumed that as long as I stayed within the desired carb range I would be ok with the tortillas.....>>

          Nope.

You really should eat ONLY from the list of acceptable foods.

Grain is the last rung of the OWL carb ladder ... so it's the last food added back in.

If you want to get the best possible benefit of doing Atkins ... and keep the weight off once you lose it, my advice is to follow the plan as Dr. Atkins wrote it.

Follow the Rules of Induction as HE wrote them!

And ... there's a learning curve ... so just keep moving forward. One mistake or assumption doesn't a disaster make ... as long as you learn from it.

You can just grease a muffin cup and make them that way ... they'll stay together.

              Hi and welcome --

I don't see where you introduced yourself on the Spotlight area so I'll welcome you here.

Make sure you drink a minimum of 64 ounces of pure water (nothing added), exercise starting today and take a multi-vitamin. If you haven't already, read the 2002 Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR). Many of the challenges will be starting the first of the month, look around to see if there are any that interest you.

Eat ONLY the foods on the acceptable food list. If a food isn't on the acceptable food list you shouldn't be eating it until you are on that Rung of the plan.

You'll find wonderful recipes here: just make sure you use Induction Recipes to begin with. Vary your meals so you don't get tired of eating the same thing over and over -- we have too many choices for that to happen.

When you are at the OWL rung where alcohol is allowed then you might find this table handy which shows how much of the alcohol used in recipes remains after using different methods of cooking
Preparation Method ... Percent of Alcohol Retained

Alcohol added to boiling liquid & removed from heat ... 85%
                Alcohol flamed ... 75%
No heat, stored overnight ... 70%
Baked, 25 minutes, alcohol not stirred into mixture ... 45%

                Baked/simmered, alcohol stirred into mixture:
                15 minutes ... 40%
                30 minutes ... 35%
                1 hour ... 25%
                1.5 hours ... 20%
                2 hours ... 10%
                2.5 hours ... 5%
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
