  • First time with the Atkins diet. Very interesting

Hi everyone, im Brandon, and ive tried basically everything else out there with VERY little success. I guess you could say my discipline with food is a bit lacking. I left the army in march of 2008 to pursue a dream as a funeral director, so my activity levels have sorta dwindled. Since march 08, i have probably put on 30 pounds from beer, pizza, and lack of exercise. But i started induction yesterday, and have done weeks of internet research on Atkins. Its actually not as bad as i anticipated it to be up to this point. I am on day two, and motivated. I weighed in yesterday, How often would you all suggest i weigh in to track my progress?

Other than the eating, i am also going to try to run at least two miles every night. If not run, i will walk it. Any suggestions? Am i overdoing it on induction? Any comments are appreciated. Thanks

    Brandon

    Hi and welcome.

I think the best course of action for you is to read/study Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, 2002 edition. The internet is a great resource. But, unfortunately, even alleged "Atkins Diet" website dispense incorrect information about the diet. Believe me, I've read some doozies from newbies who read things on the Internet about egg and meat fasts, about staying on Induction until you reach your goal, about not being able to eat tomatoes on Induction, about drinking only diet sodas (no water) during their Atkins Diet, about eating no fat on Atkins, etc. etc. etc. etc.

This is because for alot of people "Atkins" is any low carb diet---including the one they make up themselves.

So it's beneficial for you (and your general health) to read the book, rather than rely on what you found on the Internet. Even this site has some mis-information.

        >>found a pirated .pdf i>>

Some of those pirated copies aren't complete.

Aside from the fact it's illegal!

Aren't you worth owning a printed copy?

          Hi Haddix,
          I agree with Meg.
As far as weighing during the week, once a week is what Dr. Atkins advises. I agree. Our weight fluctuates so much day to day, it's best to allow your weight to seetle and only weigh once a week.
Did you measure your body? Not only will you notice the pounds coming off, you will see inches melting away. I measure once a month. It's a great way to keep track of inches lost. Plus, you will find that the tape measure is more motivating than the metal monster (scale). Also, the tape measure makes a better friend than the scale.
Yes on the exercise! It is part of the 3 legged stool of doing Atkins correctly. The 3 legs consists of WOE (way of eating), Supplements and Exercise. All 3 necessary of doing Atkins correctly.
Read DANDR 2002 and you will learn so much on how to get the healthiest that you can be.

                Hi Brandon --

To be sure you're following the same version of the book we do here check the top of the induction page you’ll find a condensed version of the book that we follow - http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-diet-14-day-induction/77558-atkins-diet-induction-faqs.html. Make a copy of this list http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.com/forums/atkins-low-carb-dieting-faqs/6781-what-foods-can-eaten-induction.html - take it with you when you go to the store. If a food isn’t listed on the acceptable food list don’t eat it. Learn to read the label on all foods you buy - don’t just look at the “carb” number look at the ingredients list of everything and check the ingredients against your list. Just because it says "low carb" doesn't mean you can eat it. Also check for hidden sugars (learn the names used in place of the word “sugar”).

                Good luck to you.
                Carole

Re: First time with the Atkins diet. Very interesting

Megs and the others gave you good food advice I am weighing in with some exercise advice. Don't go crazy and all out the first week. Start moderately easily and build. It's really easy to jump in with both feet and find yourself burned out two months later. Go at a pace and difficulty level you can sustain without getting injured or overwhelmed and change your activities every 6 weeks or so to prevent boredom.

I include free weights, walking, elliptical, water aerobics, golf, swimming, pilates, and an occasional massage in my fitness routine. Not all every week and using different routines and intensities to change things up. If I did the same thing every week I would go nuts. I also take a full day off each week and a full week off every 12-13 weeks. My way may not be right for you but it is something to think about when you plan your weight loss strategy for the long haul.
