  • Green beans during induction?

I have the list of acceptable foods and I don't see green beans on it. I went to the Atkins website and there is a 7 day menu plan that has recipes for the 1st 7 days of induction. There was a vegetable soup recipe that had 1/2 c. of green beans listed as an ingredient. Green beans are a no-no during induction, right?? If so, why is there conflicting information of the "Atkins" website? I know they also allow the new Atkins bars, shakes, etc., on the website that are restricted as far as this ADBB goes. I was just curious about the vegetables. I am on day 12 of induction and I am getting bored without new recipes. I have been eating only off of the acceptable foods list and mainly meat with salad greens. I have been "cheating" I guess because I have been drinking diet sodas whenever I want them. Does this effect everybody differently, or do you truly have to limit artificial sweetners as the food list says? I was drinking anywhere from 3-6 cans of 7-up a day and I still enjoy a soda (diet) with my meals. I am drinking my required water as well as flavored water and unsweetened tea with a slice of lemon. I guess the reason I am asking about the sweetners is because my weight has been crazy the last 12 days. I lost 8lbs, then gained, lost, gained, etc. I have the test strips, and every day I show trace amounts of ketones, but it has never shown darker than the first peach color. I can tell I am losing inches already....and people around me can tell too. I am planning on doing the extended induction, but want to do things right. Is the weight fluctuating because of my splenda intake or is this normal?

    Re: Green beans during induction?

We don't go by the website at all. We go by the Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) 2002 edition. That's the last edition writen by Dr. Atkins. That said, green beans are allowed in the list of "other veggies" as they have more carbs than salad veggies.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

It is getting harder and harder to recognize Atkins from that Nutritional webpage. They have really changed the diet a lot over the last few years. What concerns me a bit is that Dr. Atkins had a clinique where he worked with real patients as he developed his system with them. The ANA people just make it up I think partially they take into consideration what is politically correct to suggest and partially they are concerned with what sells. They are a commercial company so that is not that surprising.

      OK to your questions.
If you are getting bored plan for OWL - you have only two induction days left. OWL is a great place to have other things included.
Also a good place to look for menus and induction recipes is here:

Well you are really going overboard on those sodas Not a great habit to have. And yes sweeteners are really a problem (this is actually one of the advice that the ANA people have not changed - there are still three sweetener limits in their plan) It will impact very many people. We are really trying to avoid sweet responses. It is pretty much what this diet is about. Constantly adding sugar to your system is not great (even if is artificial) So work on it.
I always eat zero sweeteners on induction

The fact that you are restless and are experiencing craving (more and other foods) can be related to the fact that you are teasing your system with sweets all the time and not getting the full effect of the diet.

But all that being said - weight fluctuations are normal and losing inches is a very good sign.

I think I incorrectly stated "being bored". I actually don't have any cravings and I am still enjoying the foods that are on the allowed list. I am just preparing my foods in a boring way. That is why I was looking for recipes. I know that there are tons of options during induction and I don't HAVE to prepare a plain piece of meat and a salad. Thanks for the link! I will work on the diet sodas. It is not actually that I crave them, it is more of a habit from before that I have replaced with a diet soda. I will cut them out for a few days and see what happens. Thanks for the advice!!
