  • Over 45? Word of Warning

I am a long time Atkineer and when I am following this WOE I always lose. The failure is usually me. I have managed to keep about 60 pounds off without regaining for 5 years but can't seem to go lower. From March to July 1 this year I was really focused and lost 17 additional pounds. 6 in Induction.

I was thrilled with that 6 because being hormonally challenged at this time of life, you fight for every pound. So why the warning? Well, don't expect miracles if you are premenopausal.

And, worse, if you go off this WOE you gain it back FAST. 18 weeks of work for 17 pounds and six weeks off and I have regained 10 of it and I wasn't gorging myself on carbs but I wasn't watching or exercising, either.

Now I am back in my 4th day of Induction and so far, I have been clean and have only dropped one pound. Serves me right I guess. SO, be patient and true and you will get to where you need to go. Stray and it bites you back, big time. Have patience and focus on doing it right and the rest will take care of itself.

OMG - Talk about hitting the nail on the head... except I'm not back on induction yet, but ...SHEEP-DIP... I've been pretty $&&@ good, & gained improportionately kinda like an incoming tide. Hopefully it goes out soon... like, maybe after the full moon...

Learned that lesson last year when I regained 60 of the 80#s I had lost. I'm sure people thought I must have gorged on boxes of donuts and tons of french fries...but I didn't have anything like that.

Yeah a lot of newbies get bummed when 10 pounds doesn't drop off like it used to do. I figured hearing the real scoop would put things into perspective. As for my one pound? Well at this point I am just the scale is moving at all! LOL

I know. I am right there. It is the pitts.

There are a couple of things to get used to such as you say weight comes on almost just by looking on food but does not come off easily at all no matter what a person does.
And there are some spots that just will not get small no matter how much to try to lift or tone or what not.

Yeah I sometimes look at young people on the board who are impatient with their loss and think "just wait "....

Re: Over 45? Word of Warning

This is so true. I have had the experience with other diets (especially crash diets) where I would lose a lot of weight fast the first time around and then think, "hey, it doesn't matter if I gain a few pounds because now I know how to easily lose it". So I would gain back not just a few pounds but all of the weight, and then be surprised to find that I just didn't lose in the same way when I tried the same diet again .. either because my motivation wasn't so strong, or because the body knows what is happening and can more effectively fight to maintain the status quo. As we get older it seems to be more and more determined to hold onto the fat.

I am determined to keep that in mind and not let myself fall into the same trap with Atkins. At my age, I know I am lucky to still be losing well in induction and it would not be the same a second time around. This is a completely new way of eating for me and right now my body doesn't know what's hit it ... but I won't be able to fool it again!

I've been losing weight fairly well with Atkins BUT I can gain so easily. I swear I gain weight if I even walk by a loaf of bread.

I'm wondering if with us post menopausal gals that we have to find the exact right combination of foods to lose weight and then maintain. My explorations in OWL are proving interesting.

Well, nothing that will be published and make me rich!!!

Besides realizing that my WOE will NEVER be even remotely close to how I used to eat (even on South Beach Diet), I'm finding out that most of my foods need to come from the lower rungs...mainly Induction foods + veg with a little dairy and maybe a few berries here and there. Seeds are OK/nuts except for pine nuts and I feel bloated (I eat natural, unsalted nuts). Same issue with the few beans we can have in OWL (and I do mean few...you could count them! LOL).

Still new at this but so far it appears that it is the type of food (in addition to the net carbs). If I eat mostly protein/veg/fat I can have much higher net carbs than if I add nuts or beans. Maybe my body doesn't like them? I don't know yet. I'm still learning and experimenting.

Also, plain foods seem to result in better weight losses than more complicated recipes. I'm starting to make notes so I can see if it's all the ingredients & spices or if it is specific food combinations.

I have a lot of weight to lose and a long time to figure it out.
