  • 8 days on Atkins, my interpretation

Its a fairly easy diet to be on, havn't been hungry (as I was my 45 day low fat diet I was on before starting Atkins). I weighed in before I started but told myself I wasn't weighing in till 2 weeks, which will be next Weds.

Good points- I havn't felt the loss of energy or feeling bad as some have, maybe cause I've been eating breakfeast on a regular basis for the first time in my life, not hungry, been eating lots of steaks, salads, chicken wings, chicken, bacon, eggs, not bad for a diet, really do not miss the carbs much, its all good (as long as I'm dropping some weight)...

Bad Points- not that bad though, I miss a cold beer w/ my steak, most think its hard to eat a steak w/ out a potato (I was done w/ the potato anyway after the cheese, sour cream, chives, bacon ect. was gone), but for me, its a cold beer w/ my steak I miss. Having to pee constantly, I mean I'll go before going to the office, 45 minute drive and by the time I get there, I gotta go again, badly, every hour (not at all used to that). I can deal with these though.

It is hard for me to eat my 20 carbs on this diet, I do not like vegetables, not that I just don't care for them, I can not eat them, I'll throw up if someone made me eat some broccoli, squash, ect., only ones I can eat is lettuce (which I'm having a salad w/ every meal except breakfeast), and green beans and corn (neither are allowed on induction), so my carbs are coming from 2 decent size salads.

Green beans are allowed on Induction ... they're called "string beans" on the Induction food list.

As to the peeing ... after a while your bladder adjusts.

As to the beer ... well, I used to think life without chocolate wasn't worth living. Turned out I was wrong.

Now ... the inability to eat vegetables ... that's going to be a serious hindrance to doing Atkins as a Way of Eating for life.

Is it possible that you don't like them cooked a certain way? That you don't like them raw? Are you willing to try?

Good deal on the green beans, I didn't snap that they were on the list (I'm a non veg eater, the string beans didn't click), I'm going to need them.
The bathroom thing, I'll be alright, just not used to it, but it really does make my go quite a bit (feel like my sister on a family vacation, dad was always not happy about having to stop all the time, lol).
I'll be good on the beer thing too, not that I drink alot or over drink, just a beer or two in a cold mug with dinner once or twice a week always tastes good, I'm not a coke drinker, always drank alot of water (doing more now though).
I've never liked veggies, my mom is a southern mom with a garden full of fresh veggies, everybody gets excited about going to moms for fried squash, or okra, ect., except me, I've tried it every which way, just can't do it, she's gave me a hard time about it all my life, but does appreciate that I've atleast tried just about everything.
I may get a hard time about this, although I am planning on going through all the phases of the diet, my maintenence will include taking what I learned and reducing my carb intake, fast food intake, making better choices, and sticking to my workouts, and I do feel pretty strongly I will be able to maintain my healthy weight.

Sounds like you're off to a good start.
There will always be some sacrifices when we want to lose weight. There are things I would love to eat but know that I cannot.
Good job on hanging in there.
Don't give up on the veggies. After a bit maybe try another one from the list even if you do not think you like it. We change our tastebuds.

Cauliflower is a very versatile vegetable i have learned. I like this recipe from our recipe section:

If nothing else add your vegetables into your salad, or hide them in other things you eat .... I made omelets and add green, red, orange or yellow pepper, green onion, and other vegetables to get them in.

I use frozen green beans and microwave them until they are just crisp, then eat them along with a lettuce wrap for meals --- fried radishes are a good substitute for potatoes without the tang of raw radishes Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes. Mockafoni & cheese is one of my absolute favorites Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes.

Here is the page on Linda's recipe site with vegetable side dishes -- you'll be amazed how easy it is to get your veggies in with these recipes: Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes - Side Dish Recipes

Don't say you don't like vegetables -- I've got my husband eating a few things he swore he didn't like and would never eat!

Why do you think you might get a hard time about this?

Because I wasn't going to follow Atkins to a T for OWL after completing all the steps, but am going to take what I learned and cut alot of the carbs out, just not count/monitor.

OWL does not come "after completing all the steps". The order of the phases is Induction, OWL, Pre-Maintenance and Maintenance. You will continue to lose weight during the first three of these phases. Then you take what you learned in Induction, OWL and Pre-Maintenance and move to Maintenance. Maintainance means you will be eating more carbs than you did during Induction, OWL and part of your Pre-Maintenance, and you can basically eat any food (although it is recommended you avoid sugar and white flour) as long as you stay within your CCLM. If you go above your CCLM you will gain weight, and I'm sure you don't want to let this happen.

So you're not going to follow Atkins for maintenance?

One would wonder why you're doing it in the first place then?

Re: 8 days on Atkins, my interpretation

I think it is OK to start with these plans. Some of us gradually learn that if we really want to be thin (and I do) we have to make life long choices. I did not know either when I started that 2 years later i would still not be eating this or that - my plan was just to lose weight. But I come to the conclusion that I need to do things to maintain weight as well. I think you will probably find your way too when you get there dacocad.
                        Keep going.
