  • A question about salads

I'm very confused having been on many diets throughout my life, that I've been told the salads need to be small during Induction. I have had salad for lunch and for dinner (with meat of some kind). I like salads!

What is wrong with having a huge salad? Would it bring me over the 20 net carbs? Lettuce has carbs? Well I suppose it's the tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. that might bring it over?

    Could someone please explain this?

And yes I have Dr. Atkins' book but it's hard to get time to read it all. I have five young boys and I'm always busy.

    I'm doing my best!

    Thanks so much!

Depends what's in it and how big the salad is...

    Lettuce has carbs?
You can look this up yourself in the USDA database: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

All vegetables have carbs. It's important to eat a variety of vegetables. Lettuce is fine, it has some micronutrients, but you need other veggies too.

Bring it over 20? Depends how much you use of each. You can look up any food in the USDA database. Or you can use FitDay to track your foods: FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal.

And if you eat a great big salad you are still stretching your stomach out. Better to eat two small ones several hours apart even if you aren't on Atkins.

A big part of Atkins is learning portion control...eating a 'big' anything is counter-productive. A small salad with meat & fat should satisfy your hunger - you want to stop eating when you are no longer hungry, not when full or stuffed.

Take time to read the book. I think if you are going to succeed on this, getting a firm grip on the basics of what is involved is going to a must. You owe this to yourself. Don't really on thing you "hear" It is very likely myths and untruths.
