  • Too few Carbs / No Veg?

    Hi

I'm new to Atkins but have done my reseach and I'm 3 days in. However I don't like "leafy greens". I've been eating about a cup per day mixed in with some chicken and mayo but I'm not a big fan.

My question is will it be a problem if I don't eat any veg at all, and if I do my daily carb intake will be only around 3-4 grams per day, which is obviously way under the 20 max, so would this be an issue?

Also a side issue, I'm aware that I can only have a max of 4oz of cheese per day, but does anyone know why? What would it do if I had more?

Thanks for any help in advance for this newbie.

Who forces you to eat "leafy greens"? There are 54 vegetables on the Acceptable Foods List. Plenty of choices, I'd say.

    It would not be Atkins.

    Because Dr. Atkins said so.

Cheese is calorie dense (about 100 calories per oz) and we can easily overeat it.

Cheese has carbs and, on Atkins, over half of our net carbs should come from vegetables.

    Too much cheese constipates.

Too much cheese stalls some people.

Georgiana, newbies may not know what DANDR 2002 is. Better to spell out the name of the book?

Georgiana gave you good advice. You must eat veggies. And cheese is limited because a great many people stop losing if they go over 3 or 4 ounces a day. I know my limit to lose is about 3. So if you want to lose you will need to make the adjustments. Also drink at least 64 ounces of plain water daily.

The technical replies will be after mine. (nope I took too long to post, they are actually before me!)

I think for health reasons you need to try and get your veggies in, even if you can't eat them all.

When I done Atkins back in the late 90's I went long periods of time without eating any veggies. Several days I'd go 3-5 carbs maybe. I even done the fast thing that he recommended for people with high metabolic resistance, I would mix shot glasses of tuna with extra mayo and eat one shot glass, three times a day, breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I didn't weigh the cheese or limit it to 4 oz but I didn't eat tons of it every day either. I tried to always be sparing but I know there were days I was way over 4 oz.

I always drank LOTS of water to flush my system out. I never drank diet sodas or used much splenda at all, most of the time it was nothing.

I was strict with what I did for a very long time. I lost all the weight I wanted to lose plus some. I can't vouch for how healthy the above was for me, which is why I think they modified the book some?

Veggies provide a lot of vitamins and nutrients. You want to be healthy.

I look forward to hearing the formal advice.

An historical note ... Atkins even back in the 1990s wasn't "no vegetables". Just because someone did it that way doesn't make it Atkins done right!

                J. I didn't mean to imply that it did and I'm sorry if my post came across as that way. I was just sharing what I did, not that it was right.

I don't remember their being a 4 oz limit on cheese.

I do know that Dr. Adkins did describe the fat fast for those with high metabolic resistance. I was NOT recommending this either, again just sharing what I did.

                  Jenileigh,

Sometimes telling people what "I did" is construed as advice ... and correct advice.

I'm sorry I misunderstood what you were actually saying.

The 3-4 ounce limit is in the 2002 edition of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution ... I can't speak to the limits in other editions since I don't have them handy!

Okay.. so how about dietary supplements (vitamins, etc.) as opposed to eating your veggies? My daily schedule doesn't always give me the opportunity to eat what I want when I want to..

If I come home late, I settle for water until I just go to sleep, instead of eating.

                      Is that still no good?

Re: Too few Carbs / No Veg?

                        WELCOME!
Recently there was a thread mentioning to plan your veggies and add the protein around it. I have found that this works well for me, it let's me focus on the vegetables and make sure that i get enough which is usually a challenge for me, and now i eat less protien than i did when i was on Atkins previously, but the veggie/fat/protien ratios aremore on track.

Pick vegetables that u like, plan to prepare them in appetizing ways, and then have chicken or eggs or meat or cheese, whatever acceptable protein w/ it. But having just those veggies alone is ok too, as long as u get some protein during the day. You'll have a new appreciation for vegetables too!

As I have said... no vegetables = not Atkins. Plus, you might spend painful hours in the bathroom.

And as you have said... vitamins and minerals are dietary supplements. This means they are meant to supplement your diet, not to replace micronutrients you should get from food.

If you have time to eat anything else, you have time to eat veggies too. A lunchbox would solve the problem at work; you can pack a salad or just some cucumber sticks, pepper strips, etc. Or you could have veggies for breakfast and dinner, if it is absolutely impossible to have veggies for lunch.

                            Not quite.

                            From Ch. 8:
                            2. When you eat higher-carb vegetables, such as yams or winter squash, do so along with proteins and fats. They will slow the passage of carbs through your digestive system and minimize their impact on your blood sugar.
Adding some fat and/or protein to a salad minimizes the impact of the carbs on your blood-sugar level.

Yes Ma'am! I'm scared of veggies and this is why:

This is not my first go at Atkins. I have gone on it (or my own version of it, so let's just call it a low-carb diet) and I lost weight and was happy.. maintained it for awhile and then some other things happened in my life that unfortunately led to an accelerated weight gain.. fast-forward a few years and here I am.

Ever since, every time I try to go on Atkins, I experience severe stomach pain. I mean, really bad pain, to the point where I can't function. I thought it was an ulcer (or beginning of).. but that was not the case. I would eat a baby carrot and not 30 minutes would pass before I would experience this excruciating pain. I don't understand it. So, I have never been able to do Atkins for more than 2-3 days before I give up, due to the pain.

This time around, I no longer seem to have this issue. Don't get me wrong, like I said before, I am eating vegetables, but not with the consistency that would be ideal. A lunchbox doesn't work for me since I'm mobile and don't always control where I will be at any given time.

So, I try to have a breakfast that has some veggies (omelets work for me) and sometimes a tuna salad for dinner too. I then get to the point where I can no longer look at eggs! Example: yesterday, I ate 2 things only:

                              1. 10 strips of bacon (spread out through the day)
                              2. 10 black olives

That's it. I'm not happy with myself, but that's just how my day went. Today, I plan on getting my veggie on and will make it a point to incorporate it into my diet.

Question is: cooked veggies are okay or do they have to be raw?
