  • Good Earth Organic Sweet & Spicy Tea

Was wondering if I could drink this? A co-worker of mine has been making himself a cup 2 or 3 times a day and it smells great. I'm looking at the box, and it has absolutely no nutrition facts on it at all... just the ingrediants. I found a list of nutrition info on all their tea at livestrong.com, which lists this tea at 0g of carbs, but I dunno. I don't know how it could smell so sweet and have no carbs.

Here is the ingrediants, if someone more pro at this can point out if they see anything that would be a red flag:

About This Blend: The caffeine free version of our signature blend. Good Earth's unique combination of herbs and spices on an earthy, Rooibos (Roy-bos) base. Naturally sweet, with no added sugar and now available in organic. Sorry it took us so long. Amazing over ice.

Ingredients: Organic Red Rooibos, Organic Spice Blend, Organic Chicory Root, Organic Rosehips, Organic Honeybush, Natural Flavor, Organic Lemongrass, Organic Peppermint, Organic Chamomile, Organic Orange Oil and Organic Orange Peel.
A natural source of antioxidants. Caffeine Free.

    Thanks for the help!

Herbal tea is allowed ... just count 0.5 net carbs per 8 ounces ... and remember it does not count as water.

The reason it smells so sweet is because it is rooibos tea. Rooibos is herbal (no caffeine) and it naturally has a sweet smell to it.

I have not started low carbing yet. I'm poking around, seeing just what this all means. As for now, I'm cutting out refined carbs and learning a lot!

Thanks a lot for the responses.

Just out of curiosity, what happens to the water in the tea that makes it not water that I can count, cause I was really hoping to add it to my regular daily diet just to kinda not get burnt out on water. But if it's pretty much a wasted 1g carb, theres really no reason to drink it.

I'm really trying to stay away from pointless calories/carbs.

        Thanks again!

Kidneys have to work to remove all impurities of what you are eating and drinking. When we low carb we want our kidneys to be busy working on the ketosis process. Eat clean, drink clean

At the very end of Ch. 12, Dr. Atkins writes:

You can have the tea ... you just can't count it against your water.

And I wouldn't consider having it "pointless".

Re: Good Earth Organic Sweet & Spicy Tea

I get what your saying, but I try to stay away from sweets as much as possible. To be honest, even if it was countable as water and had 0 carbs, I'm not sure I'd risk drinking it. I haven't messed up one day on this diet in the 7 weeks I've been on it because I don't allow any loose ends or any possibilities for cravings. I've been on Atkins before, but never really embraced it as a new way of eating, more so, I'll lose weight, then be healthier. The way I am doing it now, is more about identifying that at this point in my life, sugars, sweets, anything that is connected to my old way of eating, is bad for me... at least at this time.

I'm not saying that down the line I will never eat a hamburger, or a slice of pizza, or a piece of bread. But right now, I'm not in the position to eat carbs even if its once every 4 weeks. And I don't want the sweet temptation to lead to fast food or anything like that... which is why this time around I don't even drink Diet Soda... it's just too close to home to regular soda, which for whatever reason makes me crave fast food, tacos, or whatever.

At least, if anything, I know that once I get down to 15lbs or so of my goal, and I start introducing small gains of carbs per week, that I can have some nice smelling tea, until then though I'll just stick to water, its working for me.

Thanks for the guidence though, it really does help.

That's what you asked in the first post.

                    >>right now, I'm not in the position to eat carbs e>>

I certainly hope you're eating "carbs" now, in the form of acceptable Induction foods ... Atkins isn't zero carbs.

                    What exactly are you eating?

Re: Good Earth Organic Sweet & Spicy Tea

Heh, sorry. I understand I need to probably be a little more clearer when I mention things. I do eat carbs. I normally have scrambled eggs and bacon or a few sausage links for breakfast, the meal is normally between 2-4 carbs.

I bring ham or turkey slices or string cheese with me to work, and have those on my 10 minute breaks. So that would be about 1-2g of carb per break, I don't eat a whole lot, not because I'm on some starvation diet, just because I eat regularly enough that I feel full rather quickly. I also bring a artichoke with some mayo, broccoli with some butter, asparagus with some butter, or I'll bring some romaine with my Ken's Caesar Salad dressing, which is 1g of carbs per serving.

And I'll have some sort of variation of what I listed for dinner. If I didn't have salad for lunch, I'll have it for dinner. If I had salad earlier in the day, I'll have an artichoke.

I'm really not much of a meat eater. Sometimes I do worry if I'm getting enough protein per day. We have some really good beef jerkey at a local store that has 3g of carbs for the package and I believe 36% of the daily protein. I try to eat it no more than once or twice a week, and only if I feel I may have not gotten enough protein... because I'm trying to stay away from processed foods.

As far as my comment on the pizza, burger, etc. Its a very touchy subject for my family. Half my family is italian, and they are very carb heavy in their eating, but my mom is 5'1" and 115lbs, my sister is skinny, my italian side is all pretty in shape, but very carb heavy. unfortunately my father's side has a history of insulin resistance and are all rather large. So when I say, I expect at some point in my future, when I am in maintenance phase, that I will at some point have a plate of pasta, a slice of pizza, or something like that. People freak out when I say this, and I understand why. I am not at my goal, I am still morbidly obese. Sadly, I have, in the past, ate a meal from McDonalds that was over 400g of Carbs and over 3000 calories... just one meal.

So when I say, oh I am sure I will have a piece of pizza at some point in my life, I understand why people would be concerned. They remember me when I used to eat fast food 3 times a day, order mexican food for an entire family and eat it myself while watching "House", or drink a 2 liter of soda, a order of bread sticks, and a large pizza all to myself while watching football on Sunday. So I get why mentioning pizza later on in my life is a red flag.

But I am all about the realization that what made me fat was not carbs, I don't believe carbs are evil. I believe it was my lack of discipline and the mistreatment of my body that led me to my weight. I believe it was too many days of eating nothing but fast food for meals, 3 meals a day, eating 7000+ calories, 600 carbs, per day, is why I am where I am right now.

So when I say eat a slice of pizza, I don't mean daily, I don't mean weekly. I just mean, if I'm out with my girlfriend and we're walking around downtown San Francisco, and she wants to grab a slice of pizza, I feel I will have the discipline to eat one slice, for that one night/week/month. Not a regular thing. Not going to Subway or McDonalds for lunch every day... just for a special occasion as a night out on the town. My doctor tells me once I get this weight off, it's all about moderation... I need to eat properly every day of my life, because there are going to be times where occasions happen where I am not going to be perfect.

The example she made, actually, was taking my son to a baseball game and having a hot dog with him. She said, you can have one hot dog, you can't have 4 hot dogs and 2 jugs of soda... and when I leave that ball game, I've had 1 hot dog, a bottle of water, and then I'm right back on my normal eating.

The thing with me, I'm a virgo, and I'm a perfectionist. And I'll the times I've lost weight, I've gained it back. Not because the diet has failed me, but because I've always looked at things as being perfect. In the past, if I've gone off one day, I'd kill myself mentally, and give up, and go off the diet because I ruined one day. I'd have a few handfulls of popcorn at the movies, be like, "Oh, I ruined the diet for today" and then go get a horribly unhealthy dinner. Then the next day I'd tell myself "Oh, I went off yesterday, so I might as well go eat something I have been craving to get it all over with in one shot"... then I'd never get back on the diet.

So believe me, I will not eat that slice of pizza if I don't feel I am completely able to look at it as it being a completely once in a month type of thing. If I haven't earned that discipline by Maintenance, if I am near my goal and ever feel that I may be tempted to eat like I used to, after having the loose skin surgery, believe me, I am not ruining all the hard work I have put in.

                        Sorry for rambling, lol.

You eat a lot of chemicals with your meals and sugars. You should try clean and unprocessed foods. Most of your carbs should come from vegetables not from fillers and sugars in your protein.

I like that you are eating veggies that is great. Keep going. Low carb rocks.

Yea, I'm just not really sure where to get protein from. I'm really not a big fan of meat. I don't eat steak and chicken and stuff like that.... I try to, I just struggle with the texture of it all in my mouth and find it pretty unbearable.

                              >>Sometimes I do worry if I'm getting enough protein per day.>>

You should track your food on Fitday ... then you'll know.

                              >>My doctor tells me once I get this weight off, it's all about moderation...>>

That may be true. And your plan of "once in a blue moon" may work out for you ... make sure you read the chapter in your DANDR, "Eating in the Real World". However ... if any of these foods are your dragons, then it may very well turn out to be the "kiss of death" for you ... there may be no "moderation".

As to protein, what about tofu?

As you know, it's difficult, but not impossible, to do Atkins as a vegetarian ... or even someone who limits their meat.
