We are going to spend Thanksgiving at my husbands grandmother's house with his side of the family. We all get along great but then there is the problem of his grandmother's FOOD! She makes tons of carby/sugary foods. Even the turkey will have sugar in it. I simply dread going! I'm planning on packing my own foods and snacks AND plan to stay full on water the whole time we are there! We went out on our monthly "family" night last night to a Mexican place. I LOVE the carby loaded burrito, chips, etc. Mexican foods. I ate before we went there and drank water the whole time. Of course I heard the whole "It won't hurt for just one meal" thing from everyone. But I stayed true to myself and made it through. Just dreading hearing the same thing at Thanksgiving from the same folks!!! Just my gripe. Thanks for listening!

Re: Dreading Thanksgiving
Sugar on the turkey - good grief
Can you bring a common dish or something?
You have a good plan - bringing your own stuff and be happy about what you are doing for you and spread your confidence and gift by listening to other people
You have already shown that you are quite a strong person. You should be proud of your restaurant venture. Next time suggest a restaurant that works for you (every other time perhaps

Re: Dreading Thanksgiving
Amiese- you will be fine, because you are already planning ahead. And one of the parts of success is planning. I, too, have had many occassions that I brought my own food, because I won't let anything get in my way.Originally posted by amiese View PostWe all get along great but then there is the problem of his grandmother's FOOD! So you are on the right path!!!
So eat before you leave your home, bring some of the food you can eat to the dinner, (a recipe that everyone can enjoy), make an Atkins friendly dessert, and have food ready at home to eat right away when you return.
We can all survive the holidays with just a little planning and willpower!
Let us know how it goes.

Re: Dreading Thanksgiving
In place of faux potatoes we're having mashed turnips - made the same way you'd make mashed potatoes -- they have a little stronger taste than potatoes but they are jst as good -- and actually "better" because they are Atkins friendly.Carole_____________________May Water 130oz daily

Re: Dreading Thanksgiving
I just say "well, you know with any diet everyone gives in sooner or later, but I am going to stick it out as long as I have the willpower" Of course they can identify with that sentiment and don't realize I will never abandon this woe.

Re: Dreading Thanksgiving
I agree with Lyssie - make your own dinner, so you can have dinner and eat with the rest. Instead of 'oh it won't hurt this one time' - maybe they will start saying 'that sure looks good, what is it'?Originally posted by Lyssie View PostWhy not go one step more and make a Thanksgiving dinner of your own? There's faux potatoes, and faux stuffing, and turkey!sigpic

Re: Dreading Thanksgiving
def make your own dish or plate maybe even bring along a cheesecake that is induction friendly! I bet they wont turn that down lol...
If you love Mexican get fajitas when you go! Just tell em no tortillas you could request them with no seasoning if you think they may have some starch/sugar in the seasoning
n I always get shredded cheese melted on top of em!! so good

Re: Dreading Thanksgiving
I hate the "just one time won't make a difference!" I've been getting it the past 2 weeks sooooo much, whenever someone offers biscuits with tea, or when we go to the pub!
You should take some vegetable side dishes like cauliflower cheese made atkins friendly with little bacon bits, that way you can at least join in the meal. This weekend I had a big family meal - ofc i couldnt eat much of it at all. Elderly relatives simply won't take no for an answer so I ate what I'd made and simply took very small spoons of the other stuff and left them on my plate, everyone else is too busy eating to realize that you only took a small amount and left it, they just presume you ate the rest of it!

Re: Dreading Thanksgiving
I feel I have a certain amount of obligation here to give you my input....based on personal experience, of course. I don't want to take an hour to research the exact number of my just once won't hurt experiment but I can tell you this, it was Easter. I was prepared. Went to Easter dinner with all my legal foods prepared. I sat down to the table and just decided that one time wouldn't hurt. Well, that one time, that one meal, turned into one day. After all, once you've blown the day, you've blown the day and ketosis is gone, right? Well, I can't remember exact numbers but I remember that ONE DAY causing water weight gain like you wouldn't believe. I'm talking TEN POUNDS. I went straight back to induction the next day, but it didn't matter. Whatever combination of devil food I consumed, it was about to beat me down. It took a week and a half to two weeks if I remember correctly. It was insane.
I just want you to remember that this one time, this one meal can easily turn into this one day, this one week, or just for the holidays. The most difficult thing we ever do is jump back on the wagon after we took a willing dive off of it. Remember the camera coming out at Christmas. Remember your goals. Don't dread Thanksgiving. I understand where you're coming from because I have dreaded it too. UNTIL....I spent some time on Linda's website looking for ways to make my own deliciousness to take with me. I'm going to make things I've never made before. I'm going to stay true to myself and the promises I've made to myself. Goal can't be too far off and I want to make it there! I'd rather have 2 lbs of fat to lose to hit goal than 2 lbs of fat and 10 lbs of water on top of that!! Hang in there. Don't listen to what others say to you unless they're supportive. Remember, when you're striving to better yourself, it brings out more haters than supporters!! You can do this!

Re: Dreading Thanksgiving
Yep, ten pounds of water is about what I gained when I cheated the last time (bad Stephanie!), and that's really all it took to convince me that it's NOT worth it. At all.I will ONLY weigh once per week! I will refer to DANDR 2002 and this forum when I have questions. I will revel in new recipes, new clothes, and the new feeling of being happy in my skin. I will hold myself accountable to do this the right way, without excuses, because I know that Atkins is the best thing for my health and happiness. I. Will. Succeed!
