  • First day about down...

And it has been an EASY PEASY day. I discovered one large fact: I must utilize recipes and keep the variety up. I got up too late today to prepare the way I would have preferred, but I still did good.

    B: eggs and bacon

    S:bacon

    L: kielbasa & green beans

    S: chicken chunks

    D: broccoli chicken casserole

    S: herbal tea

I drank 48 oz of water.

I find I am really thirsty tonight. At lunch I was really craving some potatoes or bread, but I got through it. My secretary had cookies on her desk, and I almost took one without it even being a thought. But, as my hand was going in the box, I remembered "Oh yeah, not eating that stuff now". How sad is it that I am in the habit of eating without thinking?

Awesome, I am happy for you.

When I first started 6 weeks ago, I wasn't sure if I wanted to drink water as much as they recommend. I was drinking about 100-140oz of water a day and pretty much sick of it, and even then I probably wasn't drinking enough. I also had the sick thought in my head that I didn't want to gain water weight by drinking so much water.

    Then I read this:

    Drinking Water and Weight Loss

You should read the whole thing, but here is the main part:

"There are many forms of metabolism going on in your body right now, but the one everyone is talking about it the metabolism of fat. This is actually something that the liver does when it converts stored fat to energy. The liver has other functions, but this is one of its main jobs.

Unfortunately, another of the liver’s duties is to pick up the slack for the kidneys, which need plenty of water to work properly. If the kidneys are water-deprived, the liver has to do their work along with its own, lowering its total productivity. It then can’t metabolize fat as quickly or efficiently as it could when the kidneys were pulling their own weight. If you allow this to happen, not only are you being unfair to your liver, but you’re also setting yourself up to store fat."

The whole reason the atkins diet works is not because carbs are bad, but because we are giving our bodies everything it needs to run healthy except for pure energy, which we get from carbs. After 2 days of this, the brain recognizes it's no longer receiving energy from carbs and the body goes into ketosis: burning stored energy in our fat cells. The liver is the main part that is responsible for doing this, and if your not drinking enough water, your liver will be having to do your kidney's job for it, which will in turn hamper your weight loss.

I know drinking a lot of water is very hard to do at first, specially on day 1 when your body is still craving your old habits. But I'm pretty sure if you can at least double your water intake, you will see this diet really come to life. I hope I didn't come off discouraging, the fact your fighting back now is a great great accomplishment and I hope you all the success in the world.

Thank you, I realize that. I bet that is why I was so thirsty last nights. Anyhow, I am going to make a goal of 80oz today.

I am glad you had a good first day, and congratulations on taking your hand out of the cookie bag empty

It looks as if you are 'shorting' yourself of allowed vegetables if you only had green beans and broccoli. We are allowed up to one cup of those, so that was fine but you could have added two cups from the 'salad veg' list - which includes peppers, celery, radishes, etc.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Yes, I did short on the veggies. Yesterday I did better, and today will do even better. There is definitely a learning curve here for me.
