Hello. My hubby and I are on day 4...up to this point...no bacon. We went to our local Whole Foods store today and picked up no-nitrate bacon. While preparing it tonight (to be ready to grab for breakfast tomorrow out the door) I noticed that there were 0 carbs and 0 sugars (yay)...however, when I looked at the ingredients, it stated that it had RAW SUGAR. What the heck is that??? And does it mean that even though there is no nitrate, it's still not good for induction??? I've tried looking on the boards to see if anyone else posted this question but didn't see it. Sorry in advance if I missed it. Thank you!

Re: Question on bacon during induction
In the US, if the carbohydrates are below 0.5 g per serving, they can be reported as zero.Originally posted by CiaoBella77 View PostWhile preparing it tonight (to be ready to grab for breakfast tomorrow out the door) I noticed that there were 0 carbs and 0 sugars (yay)...however, when I looked at the ingredients, it stated that it had RAW SUGAR. There certainly are better choices. Processed meats are not ideal. And does it mean that even though there is no nitrate, it's still not good for induction???
The amount of sugar in it should be small though. For most brands it is. In Europe we have the exact carb counts on labels, and all the bacon I've seen has around 0.5 net carbs per 100 g (1 oz is about 28 g). It's impossible to say whether this will affect your weight loss... but many people can eat it just fine. I certainly wouldn't eat 100 g of it every morning though.
Also, regarding nitrates, in the past years there has been research showing that they are not the big bad wolf everyone thought they are. Of course, whether you consume them or not, is your choice.
I'm sure members in the US can recommend some brands of bacon without sugar and nitrates."Get action. Seize the moment. Man was never intended to become an oyster."

I think it's very difficult in the US to find a "brand of bacon" that doesn't have one or the other. I have tried Coleman brand natural uncured ... no nitrates, but sugar ... and found it way too salty.
Since I don't eat bacon very often, I stick with the Oscar Mayer.
If I could find a nitrate free that wasn't so salty, I would gladly eat it ... I see no reason to consume something that's is known to be implicated in some cancers ... at least in animals. However, since I haven't found such a thing yet ...
You could, of course, buy "back bacon" at the butcher ...J.

Re: Question on bacon during induction
I've found no nitrates, but I've never found no sugar. I get one like the one you describe CiaoBella, "0 carbs" but with sugar in the ingredients list. I realize that it is technically not "legal", so I don't feel right about saying that it's OK to eat it, but it's never seemed to be a problem for me.
I eat two strips every couple of days.Grant

Re: Question on bacon during induction
You can find nitrate and sugar free bacon. It can be found in the meat section as "fresh bacon". Consider yourself forewarned, though, while it looks just like thick cut bacon uncooked, it neither cooks up nor tastes like real bacon.191/180.4/175/140

Re: Question on bacon during induction
Yes, it does seem almost impossible to find no sugar, no nitrate bacon that still tastes like bacon. But I think, as in with all things, moderation is also a consideration. A reasonable amount per day should be ok.(IMHO)
After all, aren't there a lot of Atkins people eating bacon and still losing pretty well. If you eat a pound a day, yes, the sugar amount may then make a difference, but a few strips a day should work out ok.259/206/149
