  • Induction.... Having trouble eating 20 carbs.

I started the diet without reading the book. I just got information online and from my brother who is 4 months into the diet/lifestyle.. Anyway I do plan to get the book and read it soon.

But I'm having trouble getting the 20 carbs a day in. I've been keeping track of exactly what I eat on fitday.com. For example - my meals today were sausage patties and scrambled eggs with some cheese on the eggs, lunch was a chicken breast grilled with some garlic wing sauce, dinner was a good size portion of venison backstrap with 2 cups of lettuce and some dressing. Totaling around 10grams of carbs... Any suggestions on how I could increase another 10 carbs without just adding more salad dressing.

Man does not live on 2 cups of lettuce alone...Remember that? Oh never mind...

Anyway you need to try a little more variety in your veggies. Have you read the stickies with the food allowed on induction? There are tons of allowed veggies with a lot more cabs than 2 cups of lettuce...and is it iceberg or romaine? Iceberg has almost no nutritional value.

Here is a carb list from the ADBB. Look for allowed veggies on this list that have a higher carb count. Try jicama, artichoke, sweet red pepper, radishes...

And there will be differing opinions as to how much the amount is, but let's just say that at least 1/2 of your carbs should be coming from veggies. Some opinions are that it should be more, (me included), but even half from veggies would be an improvement over your menu provided.

Also you should spread your veggies out over your meals, not just eat them at one meal. I can not find iceberg on Fitday, but hopefully you are eating romaine, iceberg has less carbs than Romaine. Plus you need to get net carbs, so you have to subtract the fiber from the total carbs.

Added--ok, you posted while I was writing. Food job on the romaine rather than iceberg. Now, have you read the rules of induction and all the other links about induction? Also how much water are you drinking?
I think I saw some links given to you yesterday, I apologize if I am mistaken. OK, so keep reading as much as you can, and work on those veggies!

OK, so 2 cups of romaine

3.1 carbs minus 2g of fiber = 1.1 grams of carb from veggies.

Nice to see that you are giving it a go Hoss.
There is some weird info on line so be a bit careful when you do that. As far as your brother is concerned, guys sometimes get away with this us gals can not. They have some kind of metabolism advantage so there may be things he did do that will not work for you.
We have some links in our FAQ from the book. Check those out.

And super good luck. I hope it works

                    Broccoli, flower clusters, raw - 2 ounce (56g) (about 3/4 c)
Mushrooms, brown, Italian, or Crimini, raw - 2 ounce (56g)
Peppers, sweet, yellow, raw - 1.5 ounce (42g) (about 1/4 large)
                    Spinach, raw - 2 ounce (56g)
Zucchini, includes skin, raw - 1.7 ounce (48g) (about 1/4 medium)
                    Tomatoes - 2 cherry (34g)

10g net carb, good variety, highly nutritious. Some can go atop salad greens with a basic Greek dressing (1T olive oil, 1t lemon juice, salt/pepper/oregano to taste) and a bit of shaved or shredded parmesan. Some can be sautéed with herbs, butter and garlic - or add some protein and stir-fry it (add spinach and tomatoes to the stir-fry last and warm through just before serving).

Well I got up to 15-20 with veggies... I'm 6'0 started at 282, going on 8 days later I'm down to 275. I'm using the ketosis strips and they started out with a 'trace', Now they are pegged out. I feel better, I eat when I'm hungry and I started running today. So far so good. Goal weight is where I was when i was in the best shape - 210lbs or so. Hope I get there before this time next year!
