  • Need some advice for moving out of induction

So after this weekend my 14 days will be up and I was just wondering if someone could clarify the difference between Extended Induction and moving on to OWL?

I don't have my DANDR book with me at school and relying on information I find via search engines and antecdotes makes me nervous.

I guess my main concerns are:
I'd like to eat strawberries. That's the food I'd most like to get back in my diet once out of induction.
I guess I haven't been eating as much as I though these past couple weeks- usually 1200-1500cals/day (even though I eat when hungry and until full) so I'm concerned about eating more and having a backlash somehow?? What should I do about this.

    Thanks in advance

You should move on to OWL. THe first rung of OWL is extra vegatables. Add five grams of carbohydrates from the allowed vegatable list for the next couple of weeks. Try several different vegatables and see how your weight loss is affected. Since you have already lost 14 pounds your weight loss will slow but that is normal and it would slow even if you stay on induction. Strawberries are on a higher rungso it will be a few weeks before you can add them. Good luck.

"Extended" Induction is just Induction... done longer.

I don't have my DANDR book with me at school
From your previous posts, I understand that your family is not following Atkins. So why did you leave the book at home?

      I'd like to eat strawberries.
Only come in OWL Rung 4... so by then you should get your book back.

Make sure you eat at or above your BMR. You can find your caloric needs in FitDay.

As for a "backlash"... it might happen or not. Or you might gain some pounds any day "just because". Undereating is worse.

Ditto to what the others have said. And let me further clarify what Georgianna wrote about extended Induction. All it means is that you are following the Induction Rules, eating off the Induction Acceptable Foods list for more than the initial 14 Days. In other words, it's not "extended Induction" if you eat more than 20 net carbs a day or if you eat any foods that aren't on the Induction Acceptable Foods List. I only post this because we have some folks who think that they are "extending Induction" while they are eating low carb wheat tortillas, fruit, cottage cheese, and other non-List foods.

          Thanks for the information everybody.

I feel I should clarify the "14 pound" thing though. The first 9 or 10 came from low calorie dieting for about 2 1/2 months. I posted 206 since that was my high point.
When I started Atkins though I was 196.8, today I was 191.6 so still about 5 pounds (but not quite 14).

Bummed to know I'll have to wait a few weeks for my strawberries but at least I get them back eventually

Oh. Georgianna, about the DANDR book: my parents were on Atkins a few years ago, so it's their book technically. I'll probably convince them to let me take it back with me next semester though.

Why not buy your own copy?

I've never known anyone to be successful without a copy of their own.

Well since they're not using it I don't think they'll mind my just stealing their copy. Save a little money where possible If for some unlikely reason though they don't want me to take it then I'll suck it up and buy my own.

I hope that you understood the point that having your own copy is what's important.

                >> I don't have my DANDR book with me at school>>

                Where is your copy then?

I think I said in the message before yours that I'm planning to use my parents copy while I'm home for break and then bring it back with me to school when the next semester starts...

Re: Need some advice for moving out of induction

Well, CaityE, what's confusing is you said that you didn't have YOUR copy of DANDR with you at school, which lead me to believe you actually owned a copy.

Now it seems YOUR copy is actually your parents' copy ... and that you didn't have one of your own.

                    That's the confusion!

Re: Need some advice for moving out of induction

Yeah.. I was referring to "my" copy as in 'the copy that I use'.

I just clarified that it was technically my parents copy later since you asked why I didn't have it with me at school.

I just thought it would be wasteful to buy a whole new book when there's a perfectly good copy I can use at home. And since I'm here now, wah lah! Here it is!

Your parents have the 1992 edition right? If not it would be good to just get your own. Especially if they are not pro-Atkins (I thought I read that in a PP's post). You can get them really cheap, or even borrow it from the school library. They should probably have a copy or two.

Oh, my book is the 2002 edition, but the editions before that were 1992, and 1999.

My edition says the book was originally published in 1992. Is it not the same version, just printed in 2002?
