  • Became extremely ill on day 5.

    Hey all-

I'm new and just wanted some opinions.

I followed induction rules very well for five days. I continued with my regular exercise regime and I got enough sleep. However, I noticed a few things. First, I was extremely bloated and thirsty; I was drinking approximately 65 ounces of water. Also, I was nauseas and could barely eat the food; I almost had to force myself to do it.

In addition, I was a bit light headed but I felt strong during my yoga practice every day. I started having hot and cold flashes. Extremely hot when I moved around a lot and sweating a bit, but when I was performing a sedentary activity I was so cold it was as if I couldn't get warm and had the heat up to 85. I fainted on day 5 (after eating!) and I ended up in the ER.

I'm surprised because my last blood scans showed everything was perfect. I had a check up the week before I started Atkins. I have no family history of diabetes. Sounds like hypoglycemia to me, but I dunno.

I didn't take the days leading up the issue as a big deal because those were the listed side effects of ketosis. My friends had done Atkins and said it was all normal for the first week or two. This week, I see the results of the Atkins (I'm tellin' ya!), so I want to stay low carb but I don't want to end up in another ambulance. lol Docs had no answer for me other than more blood tests next week.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Advice? Nothing like this has ever happened to me before!

My guess is that you are undereating.

Could you post a complete menu, with quantities and net carbs for all foods?

How much water are you drinking?

Some people need to eat a trifle more carbs... with hypoglycaemia symptoms early in the programme, Dr A suggests increasing your carbs by 5g of induction legal veggies.

Hope you feel better soon and are relaxed about continuing the programme.
      Merry Christmas!
