I have been reading lots of posts where people say only to drink decaf coffee. I drink a 12 oz cup of coffee every morning -- regular -- isn't this ok? I thought it said in the Atkins book that you could drink coffee in reasonable amnts -- something like 3 cups/day?

Re: Coffee?
Some people do fine without giving up their cup of regular coffee. For others, caffeine triggers cravings. In Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002), we are told to avoid caffeine. Dr. Atkins also listed it as a possible reason behind a stall.Originally posted by lowcarbgirl View PostI drink a 12 oz cup of coffee every morning -- regular -- isn't this ok?

Re: Coffee?
Some people want to give up caffeine ... so they drink decaf.
What Dr. Atkins does say is:
"*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine."
Rule # 10 of Induction is:
10. Avoid coffee, tea and soft drinks that contain caffeine. Excessive caffeine has been shown to cause low blood sugar, which can make you crave sugar.
Of course, not everyone heeds that advice.J.

Re: Coffee?
I either have 1 cup of black decaf or a herbal tea in the morning.....once you change your mindset you reallly won't "NEED" caffeine to get started in the morning.
Good luckCarole_____________________May Water 130oz daily

Re: Coffee?
To go step further...
I have read so many posts about coffee/caffeine since I started here in August. I drink no soft drinks at all for at least 5 years, so no worries about diet soda and caffeine.
My only concern is coffee or espresso. Does it just affect blood sugar, or can it stall or slow your weight loss?
I can't really say I have suffered any "blood sugar type surges making me crave sugar" type instances. I drink 2 espressos a day. One in the am, and one before bedtime. So currently since I have no sugar cravings I feel it is ok to have the caffeine.
I don't HAVE to have it, but I do ENJOY it. I used to have a vodka on ice at night after work when I got home, I enjoyed it, but I did not HAVE to have it. Did I substitute the evening espresso for the vodka? Possibly...but that is where I am at right now.
So again, my question still is...does caffeine slow or stall weight loss?
Any opinions or people with 1st hand experience....?259/206/149

Re: Coffee?
There is research done on subjects with type 2 diabetes that has shown that caffeine impairs the metabolism of meals:Originally posted by mission to lose View Postdoes caffeine slow or stall weight loss?

Insulin is a fat storing hormone... so by causing a surge in one's insulin level, caffeine can contribute to a stall.
I'm not sure if the effect is the same in normal subjects. I don't remember reading anything about it."Get action. Seize the moment. Man was never intended to become an oyster."

Im going to stick with my cup of coffee in the am -- doesn't seem to be a problem right now.
Thank you all!
Like I said, Maybe I am using it as a substitute for the nightly Vodka I gave up....LOL!
Seriously, caffeine was never a problem for me as far as sleep problems. I have a double at night with a little heavy cream about an hour before bed. I barely hit the pillow and I am asleep in minutes.259/206/149
