  • Question

I was making dinner and wanted to add some cheese to my meal. I looked at the package and it said 0 carbs for the sharp cheddar cheese that I used.

After eating dinner I went to FitDay to put in what I ate and it came up with 2.9 grams of carbs for my 2 oz of cheese.

Do I use what FitDay said or do I go by the packaging?

I was right up to the 20 grams of carbs for the day, and this puts me over and I didn't intend to.

Thank in advance for your answers
    Katie

Not what I wanted to hear, but does make me more aware. I will go put my meals into FitDay before I eat. That way I won't have regrets.

Are you counting total carbs or net carbs (of the veggies)?

What cheese did you eat? What was your Fitday entry?

All cheese has carbs. In the US, if the carbs per serving are less than 0.5 g, they are rounded to 0. So there could actually be 0.499999999 g of carbohydrates per serving.

I was right up to the 20 grams of carbs for the day
Were these net carbs? How many came from vegetables?

Hmmm. I usually go with the package label. I've noticed that a lot of foods I eat have different numbers for fats, carbs and calories than many of the generic FitDay entries.

I think that rounding down to zero thing should be banned in the U.S.--it's deceptive. Knowing what we know about that practice and just plain experience after a while counting carbs, I round up in my custom food entry.

Kaizen, what I found to be helpful is to allow room in the daily carb count for hidden carb creep. I figure if the FitDay count is X, it is probably more so I allow a little wiggle room to stay below my daily allotments. It doesn't have to be rocket science though. I don't think people fail at Atkins because their carb count was 22g one day during Induction.

                Re: Question

I allow for rounding if I use the numbers on the package label - i.e. I add 1/2 carb per serving. In DANDR, Dr. Atkins suggested counting 1 carb per ounce of cheese.

                  Re: Question

Definitely go with the Label on your package. FitDay is awesome, but they do not break most food items down by brand. I had this problem, particulary with cheese, when tracking my items on FitDay.
If it is a cheese you use often, make it a Custome Food where you enter the info off of the label and can track your use more acurately.

If you go through the FitDay food list, there are so many items that do not exist....I find it is better to make a Custom Food for anything that is dramatically off from my food label.

                  Good luck!

                    Even though it's wrong?

Cheese has carbs ... it can't be 0. Why would you advise someone, or even do it yourself, to count incorrectly?
