  • Small Victory!

Last night on the way home from work DH tells me that he accidentally forgot to take out the chicken to thaw (oops--not!). That totally threw my dinner off, but DH, helpful as always, says "Let's go to Chinese!" I toally groaned internally envisioning all the breading and fructose laiden sauces....so I suggested we got to Panda Express as a compromise. He said "OK."

So, before going to Panda Express, I hopped onto the internet and looked up nurtritional data: I decided to eat steamed veggies and mushroom chicken. Let's face it, that's no order of chow mein and orange chicken equivalent, but it tasted good, was relatively low carb all things considered, and I stuck to plan!

Whoo-hoo! So, next time someone want to sabotage, er, um, 'help out', remeber your options. Really thrilled with myself and my choices. I didn't even sneak a bite of orange chicken off DH's plate and I ditched the fortune cookie, even though it was like 3 carbs.

    >>even though it was like 3 carbs.>>

Those carbs are made from ingredients that aren't Atkins friendly though!

It's not always "just" the carb count.

    >>steamed veggies>>

Is that the "Mixed vegetables" on the website at 8 net carbs?

The mushroom chicken is 7 net carbs.

And a fortune cookie on their website is 7 net carbs per cookie.

There's also a half-portion of mixed veg at 4g net.

TBL - mushroom chicken and mixed veg was my favorite meal at Panda Express when I had gestational diabetes. And there were any number of times when I should have chosen it over orange chicken and rice even when I didn't have GD!

It was the half-portion of steamed/mixed veggies.

I'm even more glad I didn't go for the fortune cookie--I was misinformed about the total/net carb cost. 7? Yikes.

And, although a little high, I didn't think the mushroom chicken was outrageous (after all, it is 'fast' food).

congrats on not giving yourself permission to take the meal off cause your planned dinner was ruined. doing things like looking it up before you consume is a great tool to use.

7 net carbs for an entree is almost 1/3 of what you're allowed a day on Induction.

And without knowing what the ingredients are ... it was probably more than just "mushrooms and chicken", don't you think?

With all due respect, she did her best by sticking as close to the plan as she could given the circumstances. She could've thrown in the towel and gone hog wild, but she didn't, is proud of it, and wanted to share...... no need to ride her.

                    Re: Small Victory!

Ya, I've had people trying to see if I'd break this all week. Co-worker brings in a Pizza Hut stuffed crust hawaiin and offered me some, took every ounce of fiber in my body to say no (it's pretty much my favorite type of food). Every time I turn my head there is some sitting out that I want but force myself not to have. May only be 3 days in but proud of myself none-the-less.

Congrats Andrew & Tropical for making the "better" choice in difficult situations. Making the "better" choice is always better than making the worse one.

Congrats!!! We don't have a Panda Express here so I have no clue what that is. rofl but you made a good choice...I know I love chinese and japanese foods and my husband says that the only thing he misses when I go on this diet. I try to avoid them because I don't know what they put into their foods. I sure wish the places around here had websites with nutritional info. I tried asking one waitress, years ago, if they could make me something without sauce, cornstarch, or sugar and she was like "ma,am..we soak all our meats in sugar!" ughhhh.... So what did I do? I ate what my hubby ate and crashed hard!!!
You did great! I hope that I can find a place that has healthy, atkins friendly options someday soon. I sure do miss it!

I was, perhaps, pointing out that the choices made might not be so good on a regular basis.
