  • Do I Count Just Carbs or Net Carbs?

I have a question about counting carbs on induction. I hear a lot of talk about "net carbs" around here. All along, I have merely been counting carbs (if I eat anything from a package, I go by what that says.)

I printed out a recipe from Linda's Low Carb website tonight for induction-safe broccoli quiche. It says that one serving has 5g carbs and 3g net carbs.

    Which one do I count?

    Thanks in advance!

We follow DANDR 2002 at ADBB, so the carbs that count are net carbs, not total carbs.

    Which one do I count?
    Net.

Net carbs, the carb count minus the fiber content. This allows you to up your veggies without going over your net carb count.

Thanks! That's really good to know! I just started using FitDay today. Maybe I'll be able to squeeze in a couple more veggies without going over my limit!

remeber fiday doesn't count net carbs so you have to manually subtract fiber grams from your total grams of carbs to figure your net carbs.

Re: Do I Count Just Carbs or Net Carbs?

OK, I'm a little confused again...

I have been going by the three cups of veggies rule as per DANDR. I have always measured loosely packed, before cooking.

I usually have 1 cup of veggies with lunch, 1 cup of salad with dinner and 1 cup of another veggie.

I had a cup of dark salad greens with lunch today. I was going to count the broccoli in the quiche as some of my veggies, but I certainly wouldn't be eating a whole cup in that, so I figured I would have extra salad.

According to FitDay, 1 cup of salad greens is only .7 net carbs... If I eat .25c of broccoli in the quiche, that's 1.8 net carbs... That would put today's net carbs to a total of 6.7 grams. So, if I have 1 cup of salad and 3/4 cup of another inducotion safe veggie, I'll still be way under my 20 grams of carbs.

So... the question is this: Do I focus more on the measurement of veggies, or the net carb count? According to the book, it said 3 cups of the listed veggies per day...

            OK, now I'm over analyzing...

You should focus on nutrition. That is what's good for your health.

Undereating net carbs from vegetables is likely to make your diet nutritionally bankrupt, since veggies come packed with vitamins, minerals and other phytonutrients. Plus, they have only a small impact on your blood sugar. Furthermore, almost everyone can lose weight eating 20 net carbs, so there's no good reason to eat only 6.7.

1 cup of salad and 3/4 cup of another inducotion safe veggie
If you want to eat 3 cups, then you can choose vegetables higher in carbs. For example, a cup of chopped red peppers has 5.88 net carbs and 3/4 cup of pumpkin has 5.26 net carbs.

Re: Do I Count Just Carbs or Net Carbs?

it is a balancing act. we can mix and match our veggies. you don't have to comsume your entire other cup from just one veggie at one meal. you could have some 1/4th c pumpkin butter with your breakfast, your 1/4 c broccoli for dinner and have 1/2 cup of another other veggie or more of your salad veggies. it is your choice.

Dr Atkins said 3 cups cause he was limiting our carb intake as the first step in making us life time goalies in charge of our eating. He allowewd folk in DANDR 92 to use a carb gram counter to pick their own foods based on rule 5 of that plan and after 10 yrs needed to change that to eat nothing not on the acceptable foods lists. Seems his followers were not picking nutrtionally dense foods and heck if I could do induction eating 20 grams of M&Ms well you get the idea how food choices were made using that old rule.

He said no more then 20 not we had to eat 20 so if you have less then 20 that is okay too. Just when you start OWL you will need to start with whatever your carb count was during induction.

Re: Do I Count Just Carbs or Net Carbs?

Thanks for the advice! Today was a tough day for fitting in my veggies because I had company over. I really didn't put in the effort that I should have, so I just ate the salad greens because they were quick.

I was just so focused on the 3 cups rule, it isn't until I started FitDay that I realized that may not always be a good thing!

                  Thanks!!!
