  • A few questions about what I can eat

I just started the atkins diet yesterday. I have been eating eggs, cheese, red meats and chicken.
Is sugar free gum ok? The gum pack says less than 1 carb. I assumed I could just add it to my carb count.
Should I limit the number of eggs I eat? I eat about 5 per day.
Coffee is something I cannot quit cold turkey. My plan is to cut back to 2 black cups per day. Is there any other negatives besides possible sugar cravings?

    Thanks,

    Who ate your vegetables?

You need vegetables. Over half of your net carbs should come from them.

    Is sugar free gum ok?
It's allowed, but you would need to count each serving as one serving of sweetener. Sweeteners are limited to 3 packets/servings per day.

However, my advice is to break the habit of chewing gum. It brings nothing good to your diet and it can keep your sweet tooth alive.

No. But remember that most of your net carbs should come from vegetables. Eggs have carbs.

    Isn't that bad enough?!

Caffeine can stall or slow down some people by stimulating insulin production. Insulin is a fat storing hormone.

      Welcome --
How much water are you drinking daily? You should be getting a minimum of 64 ounces pure water - nothing added.

It doesn't appear you've read the book so you aren't clear on how to follow the plan. The book will give you the knowledge you need to get to your goal. If you can’t find a copy locally of the 2002 Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) check online at www.half.com or www.amazon.com – I got a “used” copy recently for less than $5.00 including shipping.

Eat only foods listed on the acceptable food list http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...induction.html (What foods can be eaten on Induction?) make sure you eat a variety of foods and vegetables and count all “net carbs”. Check Linda's recipe site it will help keep you from eating the same thing over and over -- http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/menus.html.

Good luck -- eat your veggies!!

        Thanks for the input.
I should have mentiond that I am eating the reccommended amount of veggies and taking a multi vitamin.

I know I need to cut out the coffe at some point, but a cup before I go to the gym makes my work out 10x better. I drank coffee all day long before the diet, so cutting back to 1 or 2 cups is going to be a struggle by itself.

I can kick the gum, It was a crutch after I quit smoking several years ago.

Personally, I have to stay away from gum. If I chew gum, my gastric juices seem to get active and next thing I know I'm craving food and seldom because I'm really hungry. I was describing this to a friend who is doing Atkins and she summarized what I said by saying something like ... "so you don't pretend eat pretend foods?". She is spot on.

I'm not having any hunger or craving issues...but, it's the end of day 2 and my energy is tapped. Feeling like a zombie. I ate the reccomended ratio of fats, protien and carbs. I also took my multi vitamin, ate a steak salad at lunch and a cup of califlower. Should I try different veggies?

How many net carbs did you have? How many net carbs from Induction vegetables?

Those are the things you should worry about ... let the ratios take care of themselves!

I'd suggest you reread your DANDR as feeling that way on day 2 is normal as your body uses up its stored glucose fuels and has to become a primary fatty acid fueler. It takes a bit to generate the needed "power plants", carrier molecules and all the needed enzymes to be busting fats to make body fuel units. Also if you gave up caffeine or anything else you body can be undergoing withdrawal symptoms too so just keep eating to satisfy your hunger from the induction legal foods and have some healthy fats some proteins and some of your allowed carbs each time you eat. in a few days you are going to feel great. if you feel tired then you need to eat more food according to Dr Atkins.

Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

I'm in my 10th day of induction and cutting back from 5 or 6 cups of coffee per day to one has been a challenge for me too! I drink one large cup in the morning with two Tbsp. heavy whipping cream, 2 Splenda packets, and 1 Tbsp Coconut Oil. This seems to do the trick when I need a pick-me-up and you're right, it makes a workout SO much better.
