  • birth control and thyroid?

the book says birth control and hrt may affect weight loss but only addresses how to deal with the hrt. how do you handle the effects of birth control on the diet. i can't go to a lower dose.

also tyroid. i am on natural forms of t3 and t4, have been for years. my blood tests always show that i am taking too much so no doc will raise my dose and most want to drop it, but i still have chronic low basal temp, chronic fatigue, steady hairloss, soft nails, brain fog, lipolysis resistance irregular periods when not on BC. (its not pcos. i checked)

i am supplementing with b vitamins, iodine and selenium.why does my body behave like i'm not getting thyroid and how do i get it to work like it shuold. i don't know what else to do. i have been to specialists and naturalists with n success.
i'm 25 years old, mom of two, ready to do this once and for all!
note: i am breast-feeding, though my baby is nearly weaned, eating most solid food now. i am doing this diet with the knowledge, approval, and at the suggestion of my doctor and having done my homework. i will not discuss the matter in any of my posts. please don't bring it up.

    Re: birth control and thyroid?

does your doc base your dose on a TSH test which is a pituatary test or an actual measure of your free T4 and T3?
There is a great website to help you with thyroid issues called stop the madness. several of the advocates even have lists of recommended docs all over the country to help you get your thyroid issues treated properly.

Hormones can effect your thyroid levels by binding your T4 so it can't be converted to the active T3 form. they can also cause fluid weight retension. since you are not willing to lower your dose you can just know it could be effecting your rate of lose and go from there.

Iodine isn't recommended if you have an autoimmune hypothyroid issue as that will actually make it worse.

has your doc checked your adrenals for fatigue? they can over work trying to compensate for low thyroid levels and produce symptoms similar to hypo

you should demand a full thyroid panel blood test to see if your levels are okay or not. checkout the blood testing part for the name of all the tests you should ask for.

it actually depends on how well they treat thyroid issues. both can do it right and weel and both can do it all wrong.

also my pharmacy is having a harder and harder time getting me desiccated thyroid. it seems like its being phased out.

are you talking about Armour? it was reformulated and lots of healthy properly medicated hypo folk on it are now having issues with the newer dose not matching their old one.

go to the stop the madness site and you can see what meds they are suggesting instead.

i'm on a generic form. they topped making the armour in my dose size.

but the manufacturer of what i'm taking keeps having gaps in availability. i'm don't to my last 2 pills and its on extended backorder. no idea when it will be in.

                        Hi tweedle!

I see you live in Brooklyn NY. You're in luck. If you're willing to travel to Manhattan, you can avail yourself of the endocrinologists at Columbia and Cornell. Give your insurance company a call for a list of endocrinologists at either hospital.

if you are hypo you need medication. there is nothing sold over the counter that will cause a large change in your availible thyroid hormone levels. Since your pharmacy has a lag time for your medication ask your doc to switch you to a different one. We can use synthetic T4 and T3 as 2 seperate pills to help as the natural market resupplies and gets restocked.

if you get one of those docs to see you then you can ask for a full thyroid panel with antiboides to see if you are auto immune.

the problem is with the manufaturer not the pharmacy.
