  • Um... The Big "C"

    I'm talking about constipation...

I'm pretty sure I know *why* I have this problem right now. Rather than counting every single gram of carbohydrates, I was going by the DANDR's recommended 3 cups (before cooking) of veggies per day.

I realized that was NOWHERE near enough when I started doing FitDay and found that I was only getting about 5 or 6 net carbs a day.

I know the book recommends mixing some psyllium husk in water, or trying flax meal... I don't have any psyllium husk, and I don't know what else to do with flax because I've only ever baked with it (I know some people put it in smoothies, but I seriously cannot handle drinking anything but water - blech!). Perhaps I'll try sprinkling some on my food and see if that works.

Anyway, does anyone have any other suggestions? Obviously, #1 is up the fiber intake. I can't believe how many veggies I can eat and still stay under 20g of carbs. I feel like I'm in heaven.

I have some Colace in my cabinet from when I was pregnant, so I took one of those last night to see if it would help.

I also have some alfalfa leaf tablets (1g carb, 1g fiber, so I figure it's safe) from when I was breastfeeding. I know that those can be particularly helpful in this area.

I'm just wondering if there are any other supplements or teas that I could take? I don't like the thought of mixing something in my water to drink it (bleeeeccchhh).

Oh, and yes, I know - lots and lots of water. Working on it!

    Any help would be appreciated!

Choose vegetables higher in fiber. That will also help.

And you can have 1/2 a small avocado (4.6 g of fiber) per day, too. It doesn't count as a vegetable, though.

You can make flax crackers. They are good with guacamole.

    Exercise helps, too.

    1g carb, 1g fiber, so I figure it's safe
Did you also check the ingredients?

Here's the recipe for the flax crackers: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...al-wafers.html

And you could also try a flax muffin.

Thanks for the tip!!! I made some of the flax crackers for DH and myself this afternoon. I didn't really enjoy them all that much, so I spread a thin layer of sour cream on top and they were excellent.

You can make Megs flax chips with cinnamon and sweetner but don't voerdo it cause flax can cause cramps too if you eat too much.

check your fat intake too as higher fats can help unclog folk better then more fiber.

the natural vegetable stuff Dr Atkins mentions in DANDR is senna.

I think the thread is gone, but here are two recipes.

Remember that if you have flax, you need to drink an EXTRA 8 ounces of water with each serving.

dont know if this helps, but ive suffered with the big C myself many times... if it gets real bad 'senna' works - but i have done lots of reading up on this, and it can cause irritation in the bowel - I now take a product called Oxy powders (Its in capsule form) and is a complete colon and bowel cleanser - fantastic! Im in the Uk and buy from a company called the finchley clinic, u can google if intrested, im sure they do shipping worldwide, or if not see if you can get it wherever u are. x

Georgiana - Thanks for the recipes!

Atkinsgal - I've had 90+ oz of water today, so I think I'm fine.

MzDizzy - Thanks! I'll look that up!

1/2 your current body weight would be 120 ounces.

I'm still working on it! The night is young!

I always had a hard time getting in my 64oz a day, but on Atkins, I'm ALWAYS thirsty. Not like, miserable and parched, but always happy to have some more water.

that thrist is a sign you are doing your Atkins correctly so drink up ! but be careful that you are replacing your water soluble vits and minerals so you don't have issues from that being depleted too.
