  • Should have been more careful

My dear hubby wanted to make tacos last night, and I figured that being on induction, I could eat the ground beef, shredded cheese, lettuce, and use 1 tbsp of sour cream on top. My husband measured it all out and put it into a bowl for me and I ate it all up.

This morning I woke up and I was up almost a pound. I went to FitDay and looked to see what was different and I didn't find anything. I was right on target with everything. So I just decided I would up my water for the day, thinking that it would help flush off the extra and I would stick to what I had eaten on a day that was more successful.

Then came lunchtime and my husband was reheating the leftover taco meat and I noticed it looked a different that when I make it. He had purchased a store packet of taco seasoning and it contains sugar and 3 carbs per serving!! He hadn't thought checking it since he thought it was just a spice mix and we both learned. He felt so bad, I felt bad for him.

Now I know that carbs can be lurking in the items, I will look over everything.
Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

Make sure you don't use preshredded cheese too. It tends to be coated with either corn starch or flour or both. I learned that lesson the hard way.

Well, good news is you probably didn't gain 1#, it could be water since those spice packets usually have a lot of sodium.

Bad news is---Well it is sort of good news as well----Don't weigh yourself every day, once a week or every two weeks is good, because there are too many fluctuations from day to day in your weight, and every time you see the scale go up, you may get a little upset, worried, panicky, and that could deter your progress.

Here's a taco seasoning that is tasty and cheaper:

Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes

Something like this happens to us all ... the trick is to just keep moving forward ... it's not the end of the world ... and as MissiontoLose has pointed out ... it's not really a pound of fat.

Keep in mind that your weight naturally fluctuates ... so you might have been up a pound anyway!

Good thing is that you learned the lesson about reading the list of ingredients!

I know potato starch is often used.

However, it's never been a deal breaker for me ... but YMMV!

I haven't looked at the Linda's recipe posted. But I was amazed to find that even the typical homemade taco seasoning has a lot of carbs. Chili powder and paprika are pretty high carb! I always make my own taco seasoning and it never occurred to me to count the spices in my Fitday until I saw something here that said spices have carbs too and you need to keep track. When I added them to my Fitday, I was like Whoa!

Re: Should have been more careful

Thanks for the taco seasoning and the heads up on the shredded cheese.

Good news is that my weight is back down a little below where it was the day before.

I appreciate the words about weighing in daily. It doesn't affect my mood one way or the other but I find that when I don't weigh myself daily, that is where I begin to slide away from my goal. It is just a daily reminder to me of where I am realistically at. In the past when I start to not weigh myself I started to make excuses for myself...as in "oh I ate to much of something I am not going to weigh myself for a few days. Then I start to over do on a daily basis and I don't weigh myself and I let it snowball and I end up back where I started from or worse even higher.

Re: Should have been more careful

glad you learned your lesson without a food binge too. mostlikely it was the sodium in the taco mix that sweeled you up and not the 3 grams of carbs.

The home made stuff can be carby because of the spices BUT since you are mixing it with hopefully at least 4 servings of meat it will go down to a manageble amount ofr you espically when you do net carbs because spices contain a good amount of fiber too since they are ground seeds.

                    Hi Katie,

And thanks for taking my comment the way it was intended. I am like you, I usually do weigh every morning as well, but it is not official until my weigh in day. And I have learned not to let daily ups and downs take hold of me.
But it does bother some people, as we have seen them post here saying "why did I gain a # since yesterday, I was not cheating". After some time we come to realize that 1# or 2# up or down every day does not mean too much...it is the long term that matters.

Good luck with your journey and always ask for help if you need it.
