  • No Appetite

    Hi Everyone!

I'm on my 11th day of induction and I'm finding harder each day to get my daily amount of veggies, fat, and protein in. During each meal I can only manage to eat a couple bites and feel stuffed. I'm worried that my weight is going to come to a stand still because I'm not getting enough calories!

    Hi,

Are you exercising, drinking your water? Why don't you post a menu so the pros can see any problems with what you are eating? We all feel less of an appetite for a while, but it usually lessens.
    Are you feeling ok otherwise?

How many calories per day are you actually averaging? Some people have the impression they are undereating because they compare their appetite on Atkins with the one they had pre-Atkins... and, for many, the difference is huge.

That being said, ketosis does have an appetite suppressant effect, which for many is so strong that they are truly undereating most days. If this is your case and you are "stuffed" after "a couple bites", then it will help if you eat less bites at each meal while also increasing your caloric intake. You can do this by adding calorie-dense foods to your menu. For example, instead of eating an omelet with nothing but eggs and some veggies for breakfast, you could add some heavy cream to that omelet... some olives... a few slices of avocado...

Eating more smaller meals throughout the day might also help.

Don't go for more than 6 hours without eating.

Also pay attention to ALL the symptoms of hunger... not only to what your stomach is telling you. Feeling lightheaded, having difficulties to concentrate, headaches, etc., can be symptoms of hypoglycemia. If this happens, then your body is asking for more food.

That was to be expected. However, be very careful. For some people, undereating for several days can lead to binging on "legal" foods or even to making bad food choices (here, an euphemism for cheating ).

Also check FitDay to make sure you have good intakes of vitamins and minerals.

I think I've had more water in these past 12 days than I have in my whole life! Water has always been my downfall, I never get enough and before starting Atkins, diet pop and coffee were my two main sources of liquid. I was lucky if I had a glass of water a day but now I'm drinking so much, I could seriously drain a swimming pool!

I've been exercising at home on my Wii and boy does the boxing give a great workout! I've been feeling great lately, haven't been sick or tired like I was before starting induction. I'm sure my appetite will be back soon enough.

I've definately been undereating these past couple days. I'll go ahead and start adding more calorie dense foods. Should I increase my fat also? I use 2Tbsp of butter, 2 Tbsp olive oil and 1 Tbsp coconut oil throughout the day.

              Re: No Appetite

if you are eating those fats by themselves that is the reason you can't eat your meals.

listen to your body and then make each bite when you do eat nutrtionally dense like don't eat pork rinds cause they are nutrtionally void but have some cheese with some of your veggies. Make deviled eggs if you like eggs for those not hungry days. Your body will respond to the not eating with hunger signals and then you can eat. feeling full after a few bites is a good thing and if you listen to your body and stop eating you will make it easier to become an atkins goalie.

If you get hunger after a meal of a few bites get your food back out and have some more. we can eat on our atkins any time we are hungry even if we just ate or are ready for bed!

Good job for exercising! Don't forget to take body measurements.

Without knowing how many calories you are consuming per day, it's hard to say. Fat should account for about 65% of your total calories and protein for about 30%. Choose balanced meals that combine fat, protein and carbs (preferably, veggie carbs).
