  • And the naysayers begin...

I belong to a couple mommy boards (forums). As is tradition at this time of year, many threads have turned to dieting.

I posted my story and the fact that I'm doing Atkins. Ah, the well meaning advice...
...it's the type of diet that will punish you once you stop...

    ...Our bodies need complex carbs...

...120 carbs a day, along with counting calories & fat intake is the better way to go...

...XXXX has been consistently losing weight going that route [traditional diet], along with exercise, and in the long run is more likely to keep it off [my note - as opposed to doing Atkins]...
I politely stated this is my choice and I'm more than comfortable with the data that backs it up.

More than anything, I was a bit blindsided. This particular board is a very small one and the members are normally quite cordial. I had to chuckle at one coincidence, though. I'm rereading DANDR 2002 and I just finished the section where Dr. Atkins debunks the various objections folks may have to the diet.

Ah, well. I'll just continue on and let my results speak for themselves.

In the meantime, good luck to each and every one of you in your journeys on the Atkins WOE!

True. That's why there's no "stopping". Of course, it's true of any diet!

    >>Our bodies need complex carbs...>>

We get those on Atkins. Oh ... they mean flour and sugar based complex carbs!

    Now you know better!

I know, after 4 years I STILL get the remarks and unasked for opinions about my WOE.
I'm SO sick of hear how unhealthy it is.. while they stuff their face with crap.

How can an all natural diet (for the most part) full of meats, veggies, cheeses, nuts, fruits, etc be unhealthy?
          I just don't get it..
Started Atkins on December 8th, 2005

          Officially Re-Focusing on 12-28-09.

          Was, Am, Will be: 280/222/175ish.
Started Dec 2005 and lost 105 lbs by mid 2006, maintained loss for the most part until 2009...then really let go & gained some back... lol

          so:
          Restart Progress:
          12/28/09 ~ 235.1
          01/04/10 ~ 229.0
          01/11/10 ~ 229.0 Grrrrr....
(Induction= only 6lbs but lost 10 inches! yay)

          01/5/10 ~ 226.8

if you really want to push their buttons inform them you like tio read the studies backing up their points about the atkins diet lacking those things. They will never find even one to share with you.

            Our bodies need complex carbs...

ask them why what vital nutrtiant is found only in complex carbs? the only thing found only in complex carbs is fiber!

...120 carbs a day, along with counting calories & fat intake is the better way to go...

don't you love how folk confuse the old out dated glucose fuel system needs for dietary carbohydrates? they don't know of forget the human body can make all the glucose it needs and that it is now known that ketone bodies are water soluble like glucose so every body part that has mitochondria ( that is the place fatty acids, aerobic carbohdrate reactions, and ketone fuels make energy) doesn't need any carbs. the only body parts that must have carbs ( dietary or body made) are red blood cells parts of the retina and a few specialized brain tissues.

                  Very well said!

I started typing out a big long list of reasons refuting them...then I just stopped. Honestly, I'd rather sit back and let my results speak for themselves. And they will!

One of the gals there just got a big scare because her husband had a stroke. His doctor prescribed a low calorie, low fat diet and that's partially why she's so adamant I'm doing all the wrong things. She has to believe it's the right thing for her husband or else the consequences might be unpleasant.

I'm not going to argue with her doctor, but I KNOW the Atkins WOE is the best thing to happen to me and my family since buttered bread! <== Haha, did you guys like my high carb funny? OK, I'll stop. I never said I was a comedian.

                    Re: And the naysayers begin...

LOL, I had the same thing happen to me at lunch today. I pulled out an egg and some bacon to put on my salad and had canned chicken mixed with mayo to eat with it. The one lady in there was like LOOK AT ALL THAT CHOLESTEROL. I told her I was doing Atkins.... then my other co-worker replied "I've heard alot of bad stuff about that diet." I simply asked him to show me the data, because I've seen data supporting it......not to mention being a Type 2 diabetic and seeing my glucose numbers fall dramatically in only a week of induction after taking oral meds for several months with barely any impact.

Of course he couldn't provide any data, but he knows someone, who knows someone who.....yadda yadda yadda. Results speak for themselves!

I may be one of the few, but I have every intention of stopping atkins once I hit my goal weight. Too me, it is a means to end right now. I will keep it off via exercise and Mauy Thai. Up until my deployment in Iraq I was 205 (I was wounded by an IED and was bed ridden for nearly 2 years which has been one of my main causes for the weight gain), once I get back to that weight I plan on going back to the same life style I had pre-Marines.

I guess I should submit myself to a medical journal because I was carrying around 100 + pounds of "water weight".

It's not necessary, you know - Atkins Maintenance is about as healthy and balanced as you can get.

Like many of you, I have been criticized from one extent to the other. I got a good peice of advise (cant remember where, maybe read it here) that has help with the ignorance alot. If someone is asking what you are doing, tell them you are on a low sugar diet. It works like a charm. Because most of the calorie counters and fat free people associate sugar with soda they just think you are making better food choices, which we are!! When I started telling people, I was on a low sugar diet, they praised me???????? Go figure. It's funny how the work "Atkins" brings out all the "Experts"
