    Hi!

If it says sugar anywhere in the list of indredients, there is added sugar. I buy Smithfield Low Sodium, No Sugar Added bacon. I picked some up from Meijer this morning and it was only $2.39 which isn't too bad compared to some other brands.

I also found that WalMart's Great Value Low Sodium brand has no added sugar but it is not advertised on the front. There are no sugars or "oses" listed in the ingredients.

I've used Oscar Meyer the whole time ... I only have it on weekends though.

There's also the nitrates/nitrites to consider ... which aren't ideal either.

Gwaltney sells bacon with "No Sugar Added" on the front of the package, no sugar or hidden sugar (corn syrup, etc) on the ingredients.......though its in some what small print. Also its right next to their regular bacon and they look almost identical so you have to verify which one you get. They have it in abundance at Walmart where we shop.

If the amount of sugar in an ingredient is less than 05. they count it as 0, hence the confusion. I think they should round up, but they round down. Trader Joes has a nitrate free bacon that is pretty good.

              Re: Bacon question

unless you are scaffing down a huge amount of bacon you should be fine. Sugar and salt can be used to force the fluids out of the meat during the curing process because they set up an osmotic pressure gradiant. No salt nor sugar goes inside the meat just forces fluids.

actually new research has shown that nitrates and nitrites are not cancer causing nor inhert materials in the body and are actuall used everyday by our muscles during exertion to assist with low oxygen situations and then resupplied from out foods so don't fear them in your bacon. I'd love to see what Dr Atkins would have said about them after he read the new stuff.
