  • Things to snack on?

    Hi

I've started back on Atkins today after a 2 year carb and sugar binge. I've lost the book and am waiting for a new one to arrive from Amazon.

In the meantime, I remember that I can eat meats, cheeses, eggs and salad on Induction - but does anyone have a useful list of things that I can have to hand to snack on, as that generally tends to be my downfall? I have some macademias, Greek olives and some of those mini baby bel cheeses for times when I feel the urge to trot to the fridge, has anyone got any other suggestions on snack-type foods that would be ok to eat in moderation on the Induction? I know once I've been on it a few days I'll stop craving snacks, I just need to get over the initial hurdle!

    Cheers

One of my favourite snacks is chopped celery mixed with a spoonful of mayonaise (I use Lidl's mayo which only has about .9 carbs per 100g).
Sometimes I add a bit of chopped ham or cheese to it.
Or celery spread with cream cheese or pate (need to choose the lowest carb variety of this as some have lots!)
Or roll up a slice of ham or beef round an asparagus stalk or strip of celery or just spread it with cream cheese and roll it up.
Devilled eggs are nice if you get bored with plain boiled egg.

BTW the macadamias are not on the list of induction foods!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

      Hi.

Check out the FAQ section of our forums. Towards the bottom you'll find the Rules of induction and the Induction acceptable foods list. The last thing you want to do is eat something you're not supposed to eat, like nuts or seeds.

        My favorites snacks:

        Stuffed Mushrooms: (great for company)
Mix sausage and cream cheese and a shake of parmesean
together - spoon into the mushroom caps or dip the mushrooms into it

One melted mozzerella string cheese over pepperoni slices
(I eat this when i have a pizza craving)

Sliced jicama instead of potato chips

Crab dipped in melted butter when I feel deprived...ho ho ho

Raw jicama, radishes, celery, peppers, turnips in small
pieces when I want something crunchy to munch on in front of the tv

        Boiled eggs and little smokies

Mini-omelets can be made in a muffin tray and stored for later

Atkins Flan recipe when I desire something creamy

Spaghetti Squash - (when you finish induction and move on to OWL)

        Chicken drumsticks

A snack I make for us sometimes is pepperoni slices toped with a dab of no sugar pizza sauce, a tiny bit of mozzerla, some oregano and a black olive slice. Throw that all in the oven until the cheese is bubbly and you've got yourself pizza snacks. careful on these it's easy to over do it and sodium content is high.

I make a couple of parmesan crisps , put a tiny, tiny spoonfool of homemade tomato sauce - no sugar - on it, a sprinkle of cheese, a couple of pepperoni slices, mushrooms, somtimes olives . . . pop it in the oven for a couple of minutes - a mini, crispy pizza!

                Hi Monkhey, :wave

                Welcome back to Atkins!

You've gotten some excellent ideas already so I just want to remind you that nuts are no longer allowed during induction so you're better off waiting before you dive into those macadamias.

Keep lots of easy snack foods on hand, roasted chicken legs and thighs, Turkey or roast beef roll ups, zero carb zero sugar and zero filler hotdogs and cold cuts a good brand to go by is always Boars Head - they have a fabulous selection of Atkins friendly meats and cheeses - you can check their ingredients and availability in your area on their website at www.boarshead.com

                    Thanks guys

Thanks guys for all your suggestions, I have some celery sticks, olives, cheese strings and mini no-bread pizzas sitting in my fridge now for whenever I feel tempted.

I've also rediscovered the delights of no-calorie jelly, topped with cream, and then put in the freezer for half a day until it's frozen through solid - I'm not sure if that's everyone's cup of tea but it's great in the evenings when I'm watching TV and feeling snacky - as it's frozen it takes about half an hour to pick at and eat the ice/jelly shavings, ensuring I don't feel like snacking any more when it's finished.

I've made it for one week, and stuck to it pretty much apart from some macademias during the first couple of days. I feel fine now, but awful for the first 2 1/2 days, I had a horrible headache that refused to go away even with painkillers - I think it may have been my brain craving for its usual sugar levels and caffeine! I felt like a drug addict going cold turkey (quite literally on the turkey!).

One week on the diet and I'm 5lb lighter, 3 stone more to go and I'll be back in those size 12 (UK) jeans I haven't worn since I was 18!
