  • Quick veggie question

If I ate no salad veggies for the day, does that mean I can have more of the 'nonsalad' veggies?
I wanted to eat 2 cups of broccoli but wasn't sure if that was OK.

    Thanks

actually if you are following the rules the answer is no, but with the veggie you picked, 2 cups of broccoli, for the day it shouldn't be an issue. if you had chosen 2 cups of spaghetti squash it could be an issue.

        The rules are:
2 cups of salad veggies plus 1 cup of other veggies
        or
        3 cups of salad veggies.

          Hi.

Atkins Diet Bulletin Board follows Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution 2002 edition. According to that book, you may eat either 3 cups of the salad list vegetables daily OR 2 cups of the salad list vegetables and 1 cup of the other list vegetables.

Don't get confused that salad means lettuce. There are about 20 vegetables on the "Salad" list, including cucumbers, celery, mushrooms, and peppers.

For general reference: The other part of Induction Rule 3 requires most of one's net carbs during Induction to come from the Induction-list vegetables, which is rather difficult to do while abiding by the 3-cup limit without being anal-retentive. Since I *am* anal retentive, I have posted combinations of veg in my blog that satisfy Induction Rule 3 in its entirety.

But honestly...I don't care if you eat 2 cups of broccoli. I'm not even slightly concerned about portion-controlling Induction-List vegetables. Find one of which you could consume more that 1,000 calories in a sitting*...without rupturing your stomach...then we'll talk about controlling the portion.

I care more about whether you are eating a wide variety of vegetables that provide optimal nutrition. Are you? If not, please consider selecting a mix of vegetables each day that best contribute to your overall nutrition *without* putting you over the 20g net mark when carbs from all sources are counted. Doing so would probably violate the 3 cup limit, but it would easily meet the "most net carbs from veggies" part of Rule 3...which I submit is the more important part of the Rule.

*Did you ever chow down on a fast-food burger, a large order of fries and a shake? That's at least 1,000 calories...was it the lettuce, tomato and onion in that burger that fattened us?
