  • HELP me increase fat, decrease protein

    Hi all...
I'm real active and can take a lot of protein but my percentages are off, plus I'm taking in way too much.

Can you tell me how to increase fat without increasing protein? I need to feel full, and protein does that for me, not as much fat. But I'm (confessions here) a bit leery still of fat (even though this plan ROCKS for me) so maybe I let up too much on it and put in too much protein?

    Here's today's menu
All others are similar (all other days) and I'm GETTING the results I want, just need to alter fat percentage (up) and protein down

    BREAKFAST:
    2 whole eggs
    2 cups salad greens, flax seed 1T, parmesan 1T, oil/vinegar dressing 1T

    SNACK
2 oz pork tenderloin, 2oz chicken breast. 1 oz cheddar

    LUNCH
6 oz salmon, 1/2 cup broccoli

    DINNER
1 burger patty from Costco frozen (pre portioned)
    1/2 cup celery root
1/2 cup chard sauteed in olive oil
    1 oz monterey jack cheese.

I need to keep calories around 1800 -I'm a HUGE portion control problem person. I guess I'm wondering if I'll feel FULL enough taking out some of this protein and putting in what? More butter, oil, sour cream and what not? It doesn't SOUND like real food to make me full... I work out a lot and need a lot of protein

What is your fat percentage now?
I have to be totally honest with you. If I were in your shoes. I was eating that, feeling full and losing weight - I would forget about trying to change anything. There seems to be little point.
Except slowly start to move towards a maintenance diet.

      THanks for replying!
My fat percentage now is about 25-28 and protein is like 50..it's high. I eat a LOT of protein and can't really get full any other way. in fact, I'm listless and sick-feeling without it!

I think maybe I'll go with what my body's asking for. I've always had a lot of protein, even before Atkins, which I love. Nothing bad has ever happened from it. I am in very, very good physical health and shape, other than a major bloodsugar craving/swing issue which is GONE

When I tried to control the portions and protein on fitday,I got major cravings and it was counterproductive.
      Thanks!

so your eating 25-28% fat and 50% protein in your diet?? the fat is way to low

it makes me wonder if you even switched metabolisms with a food % like that. when you switch metabolisms you can go through induction flu maybe thats why you got a sick feeling?

a high protein, low carb, low fat diet is dangerous. you should eat more fat than protein

when you eat chicken or salmon make sure the skin is still on them

and when you eat beef if possible try buying some organic beef fat to add to your meat

also unsalted butter is a good choice at geting more fat into your diet since its unsalted you can eat alot of it also try all the brands of unsalted butter some can taste alot better than others

your very close to your goal weight only 5 pounds so it can be hard to lose weight but eating such low fat is not healthy

900 calories worth of protein is a fair bit - perhaps you could work on taking it down just very very slow to see if that works better for you. move up the rungs so you could include some nuts - filling but a good combo of protein to meat. Maybe look into the Protein Power programme to see if that one is something for you -

Are you counting all of the fat you eat? For example, you list 2 eggs for breakfast...how were they prepared? Boiled or poached, no fat...fried, scrambled there is... Same for the chicken breast and salmon.

I add fat by melting butter on my veggies and by pan-frying meat and fish in butter. Also, I love bacon

I would think about using Mayo, coleslaw?, 1/2 avocado,
But I have to agree with Liv, if its working, don't worry about it.

Oops..I'm sorry...I'm about 55-60% FAT, 30-35% PROTEIN...I had that reversed...I gotcha guys, though, I'll decrease protein slllooowwwlly and add fat the way you say, in cooking, in mayo and cole slaw, etc. Fat doesn't fill me up, though, PROTEIN does, so I will look into the protein power style and see if it works for me.

I am "hearing" my body loud and clear when I was SICK yesterday and then plowed through some chicken and felt ALL better! I mean, it wasn't subtle, it was dramatic. My body NEEDED it..

in cooking, mayo and avocados, but those aren't FOOD, you know? And because I work out soooo hard, I need FOOD..IM HUNGRY sometimes and my body is screaming at me for protein...

I'm going to work on gradually altering those percentages...did better yesterday, even with the chicken incident (smile)
This is tricky, tricky, tricky, this OWL tinkering to get it just right for my body. I'll tell you ONE thing I know....carbs were making me crazy, manic, unhealthy, fat and sluggish! THAT much I do know. The rest of this WOE I'm enjoying tweaking and tinkering and learning and discovering and adjusting. Which I could NOT accomplish without your guys' excellent input and help. Thank you very, very much!

If that is the case with the percentages, adding 1 to 2 tablespoons of olive oil or butter will increase your fat % to the 60-65% range.

Fat doesn't fill me up, though, PROTEIN does, so I will look into the protein power style and see if it works for me.
What do you mean by "fill" you up? That is, are you basing your 'fullness' on the heaviness in your gut after a meal or are you basing your "fullness" on the feeling you are no longer hungry? This is an important question because many of us eat inappropriate portions and have come to recognize "fullness" as that heavy, dead-weight feeling in our stomachs after eating.

Fat contains twice the calories of protein per gram. In other words, fat is more calorie dense and should sustain you longer, calorically, than the same weight of protein.

I am "hearing" my body loud and clear when I was SICK yesterday and then plowed through some chicken and felt ALL better! I mean, it wasn't subtle, it was dramatic. My body NEEDED it..
That's the sugar rush from the excessive protein you are eating. In the book, Dr. ATkins states that excessive protein has the ability to raise your blood sugar. So how much chicken did you "plow" through?

in cooking, mayo and avocados, but those aren't FOOD, you know?
Mayo is made from eggs and oil. Eggs are "food" and is oil. Avocadoes are a fruit: it too is a food.

And because I work out soooo hard, I need FOOD..IM HUNGRY sometimes and my body is screaming at me for protein...
Don't use your working out as an excuse to overeat. Your body is probably screaming for calories---and not just from protein. AGain, gram for gram, fat contains more calories than protein.

I'm going to work on gradually altering those percentages...did better yesterday, even with the chicken incident (smile)
Again, 1 or 2 tablespoons of added fat, like olive oil or butter will raise your percentages.

This is tricky, tricky, tricky, this OWL tinkering to get it just right for my body.
I hate to tell you this but during OWL, you won't be eating more protein. You will be eating more carbs.

I'll tell you ONE thing I know....carbs were making me crazy, manic, unhealthy, fat and sluggish! THAT much I do know.
Excessive protein has the potential to do the same thing.

Re: HELP me increase fat, decrease protein

the easiest way to do it is to pick fattier protein sources pork tenderloin is very low fat how about a chop with the fat still on it or something like butt or shoulder? Chicken breast if eatten without skin is low fat. you could switch to thighs or a fat at the end of the cooking to use as a dipping sauce.
Is your costco burger lean? if so get something like ground chuck which is fattier and make burgers at home.

How about some sauce for your fish you could do a home meade tartar sauce with sugarfree pickel relish and mayo or a dill mayo or even an EEOV with dill. use your imagination.

and you won't need cups just have one or two bits less protein and a teaspoon more of fats eat meal and poof your percents will be fine your appetite will be supressed and you will be on your way to becomeing an atkins life time goalie.

Re: HELP me increase fat, decrease protein

Actually, according to the 14-day induction "rules," you should have 65% Fat, 30% Protein, and 5% Carbs, so you're definitely in the right area. You might want to add some butter or mayo to your protein, and slightly lower your protein intake.

Here is an article for the "fat" rules: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...-need-eat.html
