  • i dont understand this net carbs thing???

hi there im currently on day 11 of induction and lost 7 1/2 lb in first week, ive recently joined this site and im reading alot about net carbs. when reading dandr i was under the impression that you had to stick to under 20 g carbs per day and most of these had to come from salad veg and other veggies as written in the book. it says you can eat freely eggs, meat, fish, butter, oils etc and restrict cheese to up to 40z daily and to count the carbs in cream etc.

i have been doing this but havnt worked out the net carbs in any of my food am i doing it wrong as im now worried!!!

    is this menu ok

B- 3 slices bacon fried, 2 eggs scrambled with butter

2 cups of black decaff coffee

L- slices of roast pork, 40g of chedder, 2oz green salad with mayo

D- ribeye steak, garlic mushrooms made with butter and cream, 8oz green salad with mayo , sugar free jelly (0.5 carbs) and whipped cream 2 tblsp with 1 teaspoon of splenda (0.5 carbs)

i have not weighed or measured any of my protein except cheese as dr atkins does not state this in the book.
i am very confused now as i think i have been doing this wrong could somebody please check this menu for me.
I also drink 3-4 litres of plain water each day

    thank you
    JO xx

The carbs Dr. Atkins talks about in the book are net carbs... so total carbs minus dietary fiber.

Since you are in the UK, if you are using the nutritional information on the label, then the carbs listed there are already net carbs, unlike in the US.

    green salad
    Is this lettuce?

That's a lot of "green salad" you are eating. It's best if you eat a variety of vegetables from both list.

You seem to have the UK edition of DANDR... where the editor tried to transform from cups (a measure of volume) to weight... saying that a cup equals 8 oz of vegetables. This is incorrect, because different vegetables have different densities.

You can find the Rules of Induction here: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...induction.html

To track your carbs, you can use fitday.com. It uses the American way of showing nutritional info, so to calculate net carbs in FitDay you will need to subtract dietary fiber from total carbs.

You say you haven't measured... but approximately 65% of your daily calories should come from fat.

I can't find any in Germany either. You can use a scale to weigh your food. If you know how much you eat, then you'll know how many carbs you are consuming.

i havnt lost in 3 days
Perfectly normal. I've had weeks and even months with no weight loss.

Remember, in the UK, the carb count on packages is net carbs.

And ... you don't need an American measuring cup ... you can count carbs using weight (Fitday allows for this) ... or you can count individual items (like spears of asparagus).

And ... you simply won't lose every day.

              You're welcome, Jo!

There are examples for different way of labeling foods here:

looks good, but you need a bit more variety in your salad veggies to get more micronutriants.
congrats on your great weight loss start.

remember Dr Atkins counted cheese all cheese as one carb per ounce or 28 grams for you so even though we all know cheddar has less then that as do most aged cheese we still need to count that as a full gram of carbs. Also even though our packets of sweetner tell us they are not a gram of carbs Dr Atkins said to count each packet ( serving) of them as a gram of carb in rule 9 of induction chapter 11 DANDR 2002 so cheese and sweetner can increase our carb caount dramatically even without really doing so.

BTW most of the big supermarket chains have measuring cups and spoons in the cooking utensil section and all specialist cook-shops should have them too. I often see them in charity shops also.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
