  • New member & need a "look over"

Hi, I'm new to Atkins as of a week ago. I ordered the book but still hasn't arrived in the mail. As of today (day 7 on induction) I have lost 4lbs. I'm excited about the weight loss but worried that its just water weight and I will hit a wall soon. I have been on previous diets such as low calorie and weight watchers and my weight loss always stalls and then I give up. I am determined for Atkins to work and so far I am loving the diet. I love the meat, eggs, and cheese that I can eat. Before the diet I NEVER ate veggies and now I'm learning all kinds of new possibilites. I do have a hard time getting the minimum 12 carbs from veggies. Any suggestions on how you get these into your meals. I have a side of veggies for lunch, veggies for my afternoon snack, and lots of veggies in my dinner. Can someone take a look at my food journaling and see what I can improve on or something that I'm doing completely wrong. Thanks

B- 2 fried eggs and bacon
L- Salad with romaine lettuce, cucumbers, 2 eggs and cheese (with ranch dressing)
S - 3 celery stalks dipped in tuna salad
D- Cauliflower pizza from low carb website I found (I did eat two portions so it was 4 carbs total I think) Pizza also had green pepper, mushroom, beef, pepperoni on it

    Another day
B- egg, sausage, slice of cheese
L - Linda's chicken divan recipe, side of broccoli & cauliflower with ranch veggie dip
D - Linda's taco bake recipe topped with avacado and sour cream

Also, I'm drinking at least 64 oz of water plus 8-16 oz of crystal light. All sausage, pepperoni have 0 carbs on nutritional facts. Thanks so much for looking

Mix them in with other foods.

How many net carbs are in the food above?

How many net carbs are from vegetables?

Was the tuna salad home made?

    >>plus 8-16 oz of crystal light.>>

Each 8 ounces is a serving of sweetener ... and none of it will help you lose weight.

    >>All sausage, pepperoni have 0 carbs on nutritional facts.>>

Not likely to be true though.

Did you read the list of ingredients? That's where the story is ... I'm sure there's ingredients in there that do have carbs.

And ... both are very processed ... especially the pepperoni, and we should limit out processed meats and processed food in general.

Other than that, it seems pretty good.

Oh the net carbs for day 1 was 18 and probably only 9 of them from veggies

Day 2 was 20 carbs with 12 of them from veggies

At least thats what I "think" the net carbs were.

Well, "thinking" you know what the net carbs are isn't good planning!

You can look them up (and should) using any number of sources ... there's the carb counter in the back of your book, there's the USDA site at www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ and you can even download it to your PC, or you can use FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal or All Things Food and Diet - FatSecret.

        It's always best to "know".

I would watch for hidden fillers and sugars in the pepperoni, ranch veggie dip, tuna salad (if not homemade), bacon, ranch dressing, and sausage....Also, I believe there is a limited amount allowed on both the sour cream and avocado. Most of what I listed are problem area's for me too. I am finding out that a lot of my problems stem from only reading the nutritional facts and not the ingredients.

Your menu looks good to me. Sonya makes a good point: it isn't just about the number of carbs in the sausage, etc - for all processed/prepared foods, it is just as important to look at the list of ingredients as it is to look at the Nutritional info. All of the ingredients listed should be on the list of foods acceptable for induction. Also remember that in the US and Canada, anything with .49 carbs per serving is labelled as zero carb.

So, for example, if your sausage has High Fructose Corn Syrup in the ingredients list, it is not allowed. It does have carbs in it (all sugars do) so it could be listed as zero carb if the number of carbs per serving is <=.49

            Hope this is helpful
