  • Question about salad

    ok so if i don't have my 2 cup salad how many cups of the other veggies can i have?..i'm a big green bean,zucchini and broccoli fan, but just cannot do salads often..

    ..and is caffeine not allowed just because it can cause sugar craving or does it/can it stall weight loss?..i have a cup of coffee ever morning for breakfast

    Hi, stephjill. Since this was posted in the 14 Day Induction forum, the answer is according to the book, you can have either 3 cups of the salad list vegetables or 2 cups of the salad list veg plus 1 cup of the other veg daily.

    I do realise you will probably get responses either here or via PMs that you may eat 12-15 net carbs of any of the Induction vegetables during your Induction period and you'll do "just fine", etc. etc. etc. etc. however, since this is the 14 Day Induction Forum and according to the Forum description: "
    For all beginners of the Atkins Diet. This forum will help you along your first 14 days of the Induction Phase. Note: We are strictly by the book in this forum (DANDR - 2002)." The limits set forth in the book is what you have to work with. In DANDR 2002, eating 15 net carbs of tomatoes or onions was not advocated.

    Check the salad list.....all too often people hear the word "Salad" and automatically think lettuce. There are about 20 veggies on that salad list and all of those veggies can be cooked. So take a look and see if there are veggies there that you like or are willing to try. For example, plenty of folks like jicama, which is listed as a salad veggie. And we have an entire thread devoted to that other salad veggie, peppers. So explore your options.

    And just keep in mind, Induction lasts a minimum of 14 days. So on Day 15, move to OWL phase and eat more veg, if that is what you want.

    Caffeine has the ability to mess up your blood sugar. When your blood sugar level drops, your brains sends out the message "EAt something!!!!! We're starving!!!!!! Hurry up! Eat!!!!!" So yes, it is possible for that blood sugar drop to trigger cravings or a false hunger. And it is possible to overeat your legal Atkins foods, which would in turn result in weight stabilization or weight gain.

    Dr. Atkins wrote that the people who are dependent on caffeine should avoid it. And strangely enough, if you look at the blood sugar instability chart in the book, one of the symptoms of blood sugar instability is craving caffeine.

      Megs hit it on the head..."salad" veggies don't necessarily mean "salad" Sauteed mushrooms and/or peppers are great and are on the salad veggie list. Jicama fries are really good. Radishes can be fried like potatoes...there are lots of ways to get your salad veggies in even if you don't want "salad"

        Thought I'd add the other half of Induction Rule 3: most of one's daily net carbs must come from those Induction-List vegetables. So one must choose one's three cups quite carefully.

        (I have examples of how to get 11g net carb or more from 3 cups of vegetables in my blog.)

          okay i think i have got it...if i have 3 cups of salad veggies i cannot have any of the other veggies but if i have only 2 cups of the salad veggies i can have 1 cup of the other veggies..gosh and i have been eating just from the other veggie group..i noticed that my book is copyrighted 1999 so it must not be the same book, i might have to look for the new one now..THANKS EVERYONE!!!

              If you have a 1999 book and are following that, the "other vegetables" are limited to 2/3 cup. So even in regards to that version of the Diet, you are still overeating the veg.

              Don't get me wrong, carbs matter, but so does the glycemic index of the vegetables you eat and so does the serving size. We recently had a member ask if it would be okay to eat a two bags of lettuce because each bag was only 3 net carbs. Well, that's ALOT of lettuce---about 1 pound worth! Eating 1 pound of lettuce because it has 6 net carbs is the wrong way to think about this Diet. Portion size matters because many of us are overweight/obese because we have no concept of what a proper serving size is. Considering Dr. Atkins said you should adjust your portions as your appetite decreases, eating 1 pound of lettuce daily isn't going to help you know what a proper portion of food is.

                Coffee...while not recommended, is one of those things that varies for each person.

                I drink coffee and have been ok with it. You might just have to try it and see. Go easy though.

                  oh i drink coffee every day..a cup sometimes 2..its like my late night snack since i usually sit here on my computer and eat all the wrong foods!..i am gonna have to get the new book next time i'm out, hope walmart has it cause thats about the only place i go!

                    I don't think WM carries it anymore, at least mine doesn't. I ordered mine on Ebay, less than $5 and that included shipping. Think Amazon and other sites have them cheap too. Might be an option for you.

                      I was a HUGE coffee drinker before Atkins, but I switched to Decaf. I still drink quite a bit of it. You could try half-caf for a while to help ween your body off of the caffeine, then go decaf. Just a thought

                        Coffee is a very individual thing. I can have one cup of coffee or green tea per day and I have noticed no ill effects. I consider this to be amazing progress, since my coffee intake used to be along the lines of "all day every day"! You will have to pay close attention to make sure you don't have cravings, and make sure to drink AT LEAST 64 ounces of pure water every day.

                        Used bookstores are a great place to look for Atkins books. Do you have one nearby? I got my DANDR 2002 for $2, plus a little carb counter book for my purse for $0.49!

                            well i had a sever soda addiction, 6-10 cans a day,sometimes more! so a cup or 2 of coffee a day is awsome for me! I am going ti switch to decaf once this can i have is finished up..i drink it for the flavor not the caffeine,i think..lol

                              good for you. i had a 24 can a day soda addiction when I started atkins so I know you can do it!
