  • Chicken livers? Yes or No?

I've been on the diet for 10 days and Ive lost several lbs. Ive stuck to it so good but last night I broiled chicken livers and put a lil gravy on them(small amt of carbs) but today I looked and some chicken livers have 23 carbs?? I almost cried. I thought they would be really high in protein and low in carbs...am I wrong?

I eat quite a bit of chicken livers. I love the iron in them. I make pate. But they do not have 23 carbs - what were you looking at?????

Why did you put gravy on them that wasn't Atkins friendly?

And you know that you should limit yourself to no more than 4 ounces of organ meat per day.

You probably looked at breaded chicken livers.

It's a good idea to use FitDay or the USDA database to look up the foods you're eating.

Keep in mind that Atkins is a high fat diet... not high protein.

Organ meats are limited to 4 oz per day.

Are they breaded or marinated? I know organ meat does have carbs, but that sounds really high. I think you were looking at livers dredged in flour and fried.

I just googled them and it came up sauteed chicken livers...no flour or anything..and it said 23 carbs..I used the gravy in a jar.It was minimal but I 'll just eat them plain next time. And yes, I looked again and you are limited to only 4 ozs a day of any organ meat..

I love chicken livers! Maybe you were looking at carb counts for chopped chicken livers with lots of carmelized onions? I could see the carb count being high in that case.

As Georgiana said, try using Fitday.com to track your food and carbs. It is pretty reliable.

Raw chicken liver has 0 carbs.

I suppose I need to do an Introduction when i get a chance. I was on the Atkins two yrs ago and lost 35 lbs. i am 165 and Im 5'7. I need to be and always have been 145 until I had a child on my 40th birthday. Atkins worked realy, really well for me the last time so Im praying for the same results.

The carbs are not zero. USDA lists 0.73 net carbs for 100 g of raw chicken liver.

I wrote above how many net carbs are in 100 g of raw chicken liver. You can do the math to see how many net carbs you consumed... since I believe you know the amount of liver you had.

You need to read the book. It's Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002).

                        Sorry G,
I stand corrected, I was just quoting Fitday.

I didn't notice the FitDay entry is different. Interesting... I'm wondering where they got that from.

I think he/she means that they ought to introduce thems formally, as in "The Spotlight Introduce Yourself" part of the forum. Just a guess.
