  • Question about Nori?

I seen somewhere in here, where folks were making like sushi wraps without the rice and used the Nori. Then someone said they are not allowed on induction (or something of that sort) and I was wondering if that's true, and if so, why? I just thought, that since its so lowcarb, and its a vegie...maybe it was just a missed item in Dr. Atkins list? (crossing fingers) I would love to start making my homemade sushi again using Nori, but no rice.

    Re: Question about Nori?

Strictly speaking as it is not on the allowed list, it is not induction-legal. But as it is lowcarb many people add it on OWL rung one.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

      Re: Question about Nori?

elizellen is correct. Nori is not on the Induction Acceptable Foods list. So it is not allowed during Induction.

I know alot of people will probably say "I ate nori and it didn't affect my weight loss" or something preposterous like "Dr. Atkins didn't know anything about Japanese cuisine, eventhough he lived in New York City where one of the most famous Japanese restaurants, Nobu, is located along with other mom & pop Japanese sushi bars and restaurants. But if he was familiar with Japanese cooking, he would have allowed it."

If you want to add Nori or watercress or any other low carb veggie that isn't specifically mentioned in the List. Move to OWL Rung 1 on DAy 14.

        Re: Question about Nori?

Thanks for responding everyone. Sure gives one a lot to think about. I think I might be moving on to owl 1 here soon, my problem is that I have a low tolerance to Carbs and going just a bit higher seems to stop my weightloss. Not sure why but I think just five carbs more of vegies couldn't hurt. Is there any rules on how long you can stay on a rung?

nope you can sqat there as long as you need to. If your CCLL is just 25 net grams you can sub out some of your already eating grams of carbs for testing the foods on the next rungs as you do your OWL. We had a mod here back in 2003 that climbed the OWL carb ladder sticking to 20 net as she went from morbidly obese to just over weight.

Sometimes when we increase our carb level, we might see a small gain or a pause in weight loss... but if we stick to that carb level for 2-3 weeks, the weight starts to come off again. So, as you progress through OWL, be patient and don't rush into concluding that the new carb level does not work for you.

Also, some of us do better with certain food selections. For example, if I eat a lot of low carb, non-starchy vegetables (like, 70% or so of my net carbs) and some berries, my CCLL is about 10 net carbs higher than if I add nuts and yogurt.

my problem is that I have a low tolerance to Carbs
Did you try increasing your activity level?

Is there any rules on how long you can stay on a rung?
Nope. You can stay as long as you wish. I spent months in OWL Rung 1, but since I don't drink, I didn't care much about the alcohol rung.

And since you should only eat a new food three times a week, the time you spend on each rung will also depend on the number of foods from that food group that you want to introduce.

Thanks Georgiana and 2big....That really explains a bunch! Okay yeah I went up to OWL 1, and did alright, but then i went to OWL 2 for like a week and a half and gained 4 lbs in that time. I didn't know how long to stay on each rung, and also, I didn't really know as much about atkins as I do now. (and I still don't know enough lol) I dropped back down to Induction back then because I got scared.

I didn't increase activity levels back then, but I do plan on it this time. I am waiting for my Wii fit which I should be getting in about 2-3 weeks.

Thanks again for all of the solid info!
