  • Newbie here!

Hello everyone. This is my second time attempting Atkins. I did the diet over 10 years ago with great success and kept my weight at 170 ilbs for about 6 years. I then got lazy and am now about 215. I feel absolutely disgusted about myself.

Now that I am older I have a few concerns that maybe a few good folks out there can help answer for me.

Proteinurea - Is this common on the diet?

Only on day two of induction - Want to eat a cow. Totally Hungry. Normal?

Urine again - light yellow and cloudy. Normal?

I'm going strictly no carb except for vitamins and medications and hope to last a month. Just spent $150.00 on mostly meat and a little cheese.

What kind of weight loss should I expect within one month.

I forget how I did it before so successfully.

Thanx in advance for any answers.

    That's not Atkins.

I do hope you'll read the book, Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002) so you find out what exactly is involved.

      Re: Newbie here!

Hi Welcome to our ADBB family

From the foods you mentioned it seems you are not really following the version of Atkins we follow here as described in Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (DANDR) published 2002 in USA. So the advice given here will be different than if we were following the version you are remembering from back then.

Dr Atkins discovered in the years after his first book Dr Atkins Diet Revolution (DADR) that eating very few carbs (he allowed a small handful of lettuce on the first week in the first version then suggested we add more carbs after that) was no better than eating up to 3 cups of a wider choice of vegetables, so our 'manual' says we can eat up to 20 net carbs (carbs minus fiber in USA) of which 'most' should be from our vgetables. Also he told us to count every ounce of cheese as having one net carb, and as you probably know eggs and cream also have carbs in them.

So if you have not got a copy of DANDR 2002 see if you can get hold of on soon to understand how different our Atkins is to the one you used to follow. In UK most charity shops have copies - I think you call them thrift shops in USA.

With about 45 pounds in total to lose I see no reason to stay on the limited choices of induction for a month though - after your initial 14 days check your metabolic resistance to weightloss from the chart in DANDR then start the main weightloss phase of Atkins (ongoing weight loss/OWL and start adding more carbs in the order he suggests to find out how many carbs you can eat while still losing weight.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

        Re: Newbie here!

Thanks for the warm welcome and helpful information.

After spending considerable time reviewing this and other forums, I have decided to follow "Atkins" vs. "Zero Carbs". However, the first 14 days I will remain staunch. I am eating eggs (did not know they had carbs). The cheeses I bought are <1 gram carb and the sausage patties are <2 gram of carbs. So I guess I am getting carbs afterall.

Thanks for the reply and congrats on your own personal success story. I hope to update enthusiastically within a month.

Yes, I will do more research and find out how my metabolism works with this diet. Darn....I'm still feeling hungry as a beast into my third day! Hope it starts to wane soon.

        Thanx again!

          Re: Newbie here!

I do hope you're also eating the necessary Induction vegetables.

And if you want to do Atkins, you really need to read the book, not just this and other forums.

            Re: Newbie here!

If you are hungry on Atkins you are supposed to eat
However if you are eating too little fat you will probably be able to eat vast quantities of protein-rich low fat foods which might lead to you overeating and therefore not managing to lose weight!

Dr Atkins mentions this at the end of Chapter 11 of DANDR

Finally, make sure you are not consuming excess quantities of protein. When eaten to excess, protein converts to glucose
Maybe you might find the time to list some sample days' menus in our 'review my menu' forum to get some feedback on how balanced your intake is and avoid overeating your protein?
