  • Induction is almost over

Friday will be my last day I have lost a total of 8 lbs so far which is exactly 10% of how much I want to lose. I am expecting to pull off 10 but we will see.

I have also made the decision to continue with induction for 10 more days. Why you ask when I have had pleasant results? Well I was reading the outdated 1992 version of DANDR (I was like 11 in '92) and I feel that as soon as my book arrives (I ordered it from B&N and they found out they were out of stock so I had to re-order from another seller), that I may have even better results if I am following the updated version. Like a lot of other people I have found that visit this site, I too didn't realize that you were supposed to be counting carbs in E-VER-Y thing and I was being quite liberal with mayo and other fun stuff.

So, we will see what happens. I am just pleased that I have come this far and I know that I can continue to my long term goal with encouragment and positive feed back from you guys.

    Re: Induction is almost over

    Congratulations!

Extending your Induction only to follow the 2002 edition instead of the 1992 is not necessary. If you answered the four questions in Chapter 13 of DANDR 2002 and decided that it's time to move to OWL, then that's what it would be better to do.

Staying longer on Induction does not guarantee "better results" than adding another 5 net carbs worth of vegetables.

Since you changed from 1992 to 2002... you are counting net carbs, not total carbs... right?

No Georgina I still haven't received my book in the mail yet. I am as confused as ever on what a net carb vs a regular carb is right now.

Net carbs are total carbs minus dietary fiber. So if a food has 10 g carbohydrate and 4 g dietary fiber, it has 6 net carbs.

It's net carbs that are counted in the 2002 plan.

Oh so that is actually better because we count the net carbs as what we can have as a total right? So what if a product doesnt have any dietery fiber? And what if there is something with less than 1 g of sugar can we still have it? Are things with very low grams of sugar permitted?

We get < 20 net carbs/day on induction - I think that is what you mean? So, yes, counting net carbs rather than total carbs allows you to eat more carbs.

total carbs - zero = total carbs = net carbs (if there is no fibre, then the total carbs and net carbs are the same)

It has nothing to do with how many grams of sugar are in it - all of the ingredients in a food have to be on the list of foods acceptable for induction. That is the rule (many people make exceptions for things like Mayo that have a little bit of sugar in them...but that isn't technically within the rules...it is just done for convenience and because most people can get away with it)

Also, don't confuse 'sugars' on the nutritional panel of the label with 'sugar'. The nutrition panel counts natural sugar in veggies, etc as 'sugars'. Go by the list of ingredients instead.

              Hope this helps

To help until you get your book. Here is the mini quiz Dr. Atkins has to help you decide if you are ready to move on from Induction.

                  1. Are you bored with induction?

                  2. How much weight do you have to lose?

                  3. How metabolically resistant are you to weight loss? (does your book have the metabolic chart in it?)

                  4. Are you willing to slow down the pace of weight loss in exchange for more food choices?

                    Re: Induction is almost over

moving to OWL is very simple you just add 5 more net grams of those yummy induction veggies to your 3 cups you had during induction and the list of veggies is the same in both books but the serving size for the other veggies is one cup UNCOOKED.

so you can do OWL rung one with your old book and be that much ahead when your new book arrives. If you pick one of those 54 veggies from the lists that you didn't eat during induction then you just test it 3 times the frist week you eat it so you can see in a controlled manner how it effects your craving controls and your weight loss. some folk have veggie triggers that other folk don't.

Also regardless of which way you go OWL or extended induction you shuld know that it is perfectly normal to have a week or two of no scale weight loss after the initial loss. That will happen on any weight loss plan and Atkinseers call it PISS so besure you have taken your measurements so during PISS you can actually see the body fat being burned off as you work your atkins.
