  • What if you want to go out and drink alcohol sometimes?

I do like to let loose and party sometimes. Even if it's getting a bottle of wine here at my apartment and drinking it till I feel a buzz.

I don't do this every week, however, I like to drink sometimes espcially if it's an occasional Friday or Saturday night.

So what would happen to my body if I got buzzed one night?

What does drinking do to the your metabolism?
How long would it take to get back into ketosis after 1 night of drinking?

Will I gain weight back from only one night?
On Induction since: Jan 25th 2010
    weight now: 155
    goal weight: 125
    30 pounds to go

    Hi Synthetic,

Alcohol isn't allowed on Induction. It is allowed When you reach Rung 5 when you are on OWL.

As to what will happen if you drink, the results are different for everyone.

I like to drink EVERYDAY, not just the weekends, but it will be counterproductive for me to drink until I reach that level/rung, and I personally don't want to experiment to see how it will affect my results so far...I have worked too hard to get where I am.

    The OWL Carbohydrate Ladder
    1. Vegetables
More salad and other vegetables on the acceptable foods list

    2. Dairy
      Fresh cheeses:

      Pistachios

    4. Berries
      Eat frequently from:
      Strawberries
      Blueberries
      Blackberries
      Raspberries

Eat moderately from higher AGR melons:
      Honeydew
      Cantaloupe
    5. Wine and other spirits low in carbs
      Spirits
      White Wine
      Red Wine
      Low-carbohydrate Beer
    6. Legumes
      Lentils

      Pinto Beans
      Black Beans
      Hummus

ok right, then once the alchahol is burned, does the metabolism go back to burning fat again if you don't ingest any more carbs?

yep after the alcohol is used up the ketosis continues.

one thing they didn't mention is many folk who have experiemented with alcohol discover when they are in ketosis it takes much less alcohol to make them feel drunk so when you arrive in OWL on rung 5 be careful

When I was in college, my friends and I used to take turns being the "designated driver". I soon learned that the only thing that made the parties non-boring was the booze. So I found a better quality friends to hang around with and the parties were not boring without the booze.

Anyhow, alcohol is permitted on Atkins during the OWL phase. If you really really really "need" to have a weekly drink, then for the purposes of this Diet, move to OWL phase on Day 15. Because as others have said, you do not metabolize your fat while your body is burning the alcohol.

By the way, I realize you will get PMs and probably even posts here that "I drank alcohol throughout my Induction, and I was in ketosis the whole time because the ketostix were dark purple! So I WAS burning fat after drinking my Manhattans and Tom Collins! Ha Ha Ha....Dr. Atkins and these Atkins police are WROOOOONG!!!!!!!" Unfortunately, the ketostix test for a ketone that is chemically similar to a by-product of alcohol metabolism. Therefore, a false positive results. So, while the ketostix tests positive after imbibing alcoholic beverages, it is just indicating that you are burning alcohol, not body fat.
