  • Just realized I may be hurting my progress....

    Hello

I've been reading around the boards, and found a post saying that the salad that's bagged with carrots and (i guess its called cabbage, the gross purple stuff), is no good? That's been where a big chunk of my veggies are coming from (3 cups a day of it or so).

But I'm also reading more and more into the New Diet Revolution book the importance of veggies in other forms. Here's where I got "woken up" to the fact I may be screwing up Induction.

Today is day 5 of Atkins, I've used strips and I'm in ketosis, and I'm losing weight. However, today I woke up feeling horrible. I was light headed, felt faint, a little nauseous, and just generally felt like crap. I ate an egg omlet with bacon and cheese for breakfast. At break at work, (I know they're not recommended), I had one of the Atkins Bars because I felt like maybe I should eat something.

Now, I originally thought it was because I only got like 4 1/2 hours of sleep (got to bed late last night), but now I'm not so sure. After eating the bar, it helped, not a lot, but a little. Could it be because of my veggie intake being only that salad mix? Should I mix in some cauliflower or celery? The biggest problem is I don't like a lot of the vegetables on the AFL, but I do like those few.

I guess my typical menu (meats vary, basics are the same) would be eggs/bacon for breakfast, string cheese for snack 1, tuna w/ mayo, mustard, pickles for lunch (possibly with some Braunschweiger if I have some it on hand), snack 2 is generally peperoni, and for dinner either chicken, salmon, steak, burger patty with a big salad (sometimes with olives and hard boiled egg). Sometimes I have a small salad at dinner and a small one with lunch. Salad is that mixed with carrots and cabbage I mentioned at the beginning of the post. But as you can see, the salad is my veggies. Period. I think I need to change that.....

I hope I didn't ramble too long. I have friends who did Atkins and told me to not worry about veggies and stick to salad because it worked just fine for them (they used that salad mix). I hate to call them wrong, but I think they are. I don't want to feel sick like this anymore. I could barely do my work today and I almost had to tell my boss I had to go home because I thought I would be passing out.

Thanks for reading and any input you can offer.

Edit: Oh, and I do take a multivitamin w/o iron, a Super B Complex, and Fish Oil.

The feeling you have is most likely induction flu. Most people get a yicky, sick, no-energy feeling within the first week of Atkins. It will go away.

The carrots and red cabbage aren't on the Induction food list. There are bagged salads without them though. Or you could just cut up your own.

Cabbage is on the Acceptable Foods List. The color is not important.

It could be the so-called "Induction flu". It is your body transitioning from glucosis to lipolysis. If this is the case, it should go away soon.

Should I mix in some cauliflower or celery?
It definitely wouldn't hurt. More variety generally means better nutrition.

The biggest problem is I don't like a lot of the vegetables on the AFL, but I do like those few.
What do you like other than cucumbers/pickles, cabbage, cauliflower and celery?

If you don't like any others, I bet you just didn't find a good recipe.

It is also better to spread your net carbs throughout the day, to avoid blood sugar spikes. If you eat a big salad for dinner, then your dinner will be quite "carby" compared to your other meals.

By the way, you did read the list of ingredients for those pickles, right?

Thanks Eama and Georgiana, I appreciate the super fast replies. Thanks for the term 'induction flu', I was able to bring up a lot of topics on that and I'm hoping thats what I have and will pass!

I guess to be honest, I haven't tried many of the others, or at least most of them. And spreading makes sense, I try to, but sometimes just fail. Like today I had 7 before lunch, then at lunch today I had a salad with cauliflower and olives for a total of 8, to leave 5 left for dinner. So maybe I ate a bit too much for lunch, but I'm still learning, so I'll work on that.

Cucumbers, Water, Distilled Vinegar, Salt, Calcium, Sodium Benzoate (preservative), polysorbate 80, natural flavors, yellow 5.

If you mentioned that so that I recognize that pickles are cucumbers, bravo. I honestly had no idea lol. So they have seeds, they're technically a fruit and off limits, correct?

If you had another intention in mind, forgive me I missed it

Re: Just realized I may be hurting my progress....

if you are just eating that salad mix you could be deficient in some vits and minerals that made y9ou feel so bad. You can plug your foods for free into fitday.com online and then look in the reports section at your vits and minerals and see what you are low in and then supplement accordingly.

if eating the bar made you feel better then you know you need more calorically dense foods either more ofthen or more food at meal time.

I would advise you to read your DANDR cause doing a word of mouth Atkins usually ends up missing several key points.

I absolutely agree. I am reading the book right now because I have so far found several misconceptions that I was told that they were wrong about. Thanks for the tip on FitDay, I'll check that. Could I be low even though I'm taking a multi, B, and Fish oil?

True, good point. I am a bigger guy, so I suppose eating only a few hundred calories (estimating of course) for breakfast might not be enough to fuel me. I'll try to make a bit more in the future.

                    glad you are reading.

And since the induction veggies are defined by the lists in DANDR many things that are botanically fruits are on that veggie list so enjoy your cucumbers.

Wasn't it a Supreme Court decision in the late 1800s that classified tomatoes as a vegetable?

Speaking of pickles, I was furious, really, really furious, that Clausen puts corn syrup in their dill pickles. I'm still angry. (I had to emphasize how upset I am without swearing..)

Re: Just realized I may be hurting my progress....

Erik, the thing with checking the ingredients in pickles (or anything else for that matter), is that everything you eat has to be on the list of foods acceptable for induction. Some pickles have sugar in them, some don't. Pickles are legal on induction as long as all of the ingredients in them are on the list of foods acceptable for induction. So someone may tell you "dill pickles are legal on induction"...but that isn't necessarily true - BTW - yours are fine

Same goes for the pepperoni - it is really hard to find pepperoni with no sugar (under any of its many names) or starch in it.

Ya I'm becoming more aware of ingredients. Though the Hormel brand pep at Safeway I buy has no sugar in it, so thats a plus.

My pickles do say 1g Sugar, didn't notice it before. Guess I need to switch brands. Thanks everyone for the information, I really appreciate it.

Now to hunt out some new foods, because I'm getting sick of chicken or tuna for dinner.

There are sugar free pickles made with Splenda by Mt. Olive. The relish is fantastic & a major staple in my diet.
