  • Is too long on induction bad?

    Hi:

I'm thinking of staying on induction phase for a year. Is this bad for health?

I have a lot of weight to lose. I'm currently 195 lbs when I should be at most 140 lbs.

I figure the longer I stay on induction, the more I will lose. Is this true?

    Thanks a bunch,

    Green Xenon

Re: Is too long on induction bad?

Think about your atkins eating as building a house for you to move in when you get to goal weight. Induction is the foundation and we need to work our induction wisely drinking all the water and eating our veggies to allow our foundation to be strong and last a life time. BUT nobody wants to live in a house with just a basement.

You need walls which is what OWL is all about. You being both the builder and the owner want to be sure your house is made of the best materials that you like and have access to. So we spend quite a bit of time testing those OWL rood rungs to know what foods we can tolerate and what foods we can't. What foods will cause cravings and what foods won't after all you don't want to live in a house that makes you regain your weight that you just lost do you?

Once you got your framing done and your walls up you need a roof and that is what premaintnenace is all about. You need strong trusses to enclose your house so it will last the rest of your life. Dr Atkins recomends using 6 months to do the final 5-10 pounds in the premaintnenace phase.
then when you move in at goal weight and put the finishing touches on your house you know that it will stand against the toxic highcarb foods that are always there waiting for you to open the door and let them back in so they can make you back into that 190 pounder or even bigger.

Spend some time in induction and move to OWl and start framing your house

do you have your DANDR? of so read chapter 13 and answer those questions.

Dr Atkins says those who work the phases of his plan have a better time staying goalies and I know y'all don't want to arrive at goal weight and then gain it back.

He also says we need to lose that last 5-10 pounds in pre and one has to have worked OWL before moving to pre so don't stay too long.

              >>what if you enjoy all the induction foods?>>

You can still eat them. You just need to add net carbs ... by increasing your carb count.

If you only have 6 pounds to go, you should be almost at pre-maintenance.

So, if that's the case ... what happened to OWL?

How will you know how to maintain your weight loss if you don't do OWL?

You also want to pay attention to all those 2nd & 3rd (and more) repeaters who tell the tale of what they did wrong "the first time". The #1 thing is most likely ... they stayed on Induction too long, and the #2 is they didn't do OWL properly.

Why not learn from their mistakes rather than make it yourself?

And ... Dr. Atkins wrote the plan with 4 phases ... he saw how people kept the weight off.

The longest study of Induction is 6 months ... longer than that isn't really safe ... unless you're doing it under the supervision of your doctor.

Remember ... any mention of people in DANDR ... they were patients of Dr. Atkins.

think what i was trying to ask,i love the induction food and veg etc

i have started to add protein powders etc,so if you can handle eating the 20g of carbs a day and your getting your veg isnt that safer and better? (only a question)

never saw him in print saying a yr. He said in 92 DANDR he did not advise staying on induction for any length of time unless it was the only phase that worked for you. p125 DANDR 92

                            No.

And you should be adding more real food, not a powder.

To me, it is not safety that is in question. It is the fact that by staying in Induction too long, you are missing out on gaining information vital to keeping the weight off, once you lose it.

How many net carbs can I eat and still lose weight?

How many net carbs can I eat and not gain weight?

Exactly which foods do I have intolerances to?

You will never learn any of these things by staying in Induction until you reach goal.

You say you are happy with Induction foods. That's good, as they will still be the mainstay of your menu. But it is just smart to learn what else you can enhance that menu with. Staying on Induction until goal demonstrates a view that Atkins is just a means to lose weight... properly progressing through the rungs, determining food intolerances, determining CCLL and CCLM demonstates a commitment to Atkins as lifestyle to lose the weight and keep it off.

                              Just my two cents.
