Now give that blood glucose monitor back to your husband. Your body is working fine. You're not a diabetic and the only reason a diabetics blood sugar drops too low is because they have too much insulin in their body for what ever reason. Your body will compensate and will work appropriately.

Remember that Dr Atkins diet is good for diabetics because it helps regulate blood sugar and decreases the bodies need for insulin where the diabetic isn't producing enough to keep their blood sugar within a healthy range. If a diabetics blood sugar is too HIGH (hyperglycemia) their bodies go into Ketoacidosis (not to be confused with ketosis - totally different) and they also get into problems when they take too much of their diabetic meds and/or do not eat enough, causing low blood sugar which can lead to diabetic coma (hypoglycemia). Both are not good, but you shouldn't worry about it (for yourself) since you do not have diabetes.

Speaking of which, has your husband spoken to his doctor about getting on Atkins? It may be benificial for him to do so. It certainly would help you if both of you are on the plan. Just a thought.

Best of luck to both of you.
Thank you. I think my body is now doing what it is suppose to do. We went to Walmart and stocked up on Atkins shakes and bars the other day so I don't have a fallout like I did last week. At least now if I get a craving I can drink a shake instead of a Capri Sun.

And no husband hasn't talked to the doctor about going on the diet, he is on the diet. He probably should have talked to the doctor about it but it is so hard to get him to go on a regular visit. He is 1 day ahead of me and I am very proud that he is doing so well. He hasn't had any issues with his BS dropping unexpectedly. And he hasn't cheated. I'm not sure how much I weigh. A guess would be around 175. Husband on the other hand is almost 400 lbs. With him small successes will equal big ones. He has a long way to go but hope he can do it. Thanks for all your help!

Maxwell ( I feel strange calling a woman Maxwell, but anyway) I am glad you are feeling better.

Now about your husband, I would strongly recommend that he at least talk to his doctor by telephone. If he is doing Atkins, the effect on a diabetic's (I'm assuming Type II) blood sugar, especially in conjuctiuon with his meds can lead to lower than normal blood sugar. I'm sure he monitors it, but his doctor may want to adjust his meds as he progresses through the plan and has his "small successes".

Best of luck to you both and keep us informed.
      Jim

Re: Help! I'm Having A Blood Sugar Drop

During the first couple of days when I was going through Atkins flu, it was terrible and I too was shaky, dizzy, and suffering from a splitting headache. One of the Atkin's books i have (I think in Atkins for Life ) it said you shouldn't torture yourself if you feel real bad during the induction phase. If your Atkins flu symptoms are bad go ahead and have an apple. To make it out through to the door to work one morning last week I ate half a banana. In a little while I felt fine and never "cheated" on my diet since. I don't feel guilty at all..lol and it didnt sabatoge my weight loss.

That's awesome that you're both doing it.

If your hubby is on a sliding scale routine, be may think he doesn't need to to have his meds adjusted. But he does. Have him at least call his MD (as someone already suggested). What can it hurt??? The opposite isn't true.

Becareful with those bars & shakes. Use them minimally. I find that my weight loss stalls for a week if I have one (as do many others).

jroche5998, the user name is a shortened version of our dogs name of 13 1/2 years. He passed away in March of '07. Thought that may help you understand the male name coming from a female.

betul2006, thank you for your input! Everything is appreciated. Hubby loves bananas but hasn't had any since no fruit is allowed on the induction phase.

Polarbearking he has an appointment with the doctor March 3rd that is the soonest he could get in and he will speak to the doctor about it then. I hope she isn't negative about this because he is doing so well. Good to know about the shakes and bars because I thought since it said it was good for all phases that it would be okay to eat or drink those liberally. We will keep it to a minimum.

We have the keto strips and was wondering when is the best time to do those? First morning urine before anything is ate or when? Thanks in advance. So far mine went up to small but went back to negative after I indulged on the Capri Sun. Hubby's has yet to turn. I know he is frustrated but maybe we aren't doing them at the right time?

Re: Help! I'm Having A Blood Sugar Drop

As Polar said, be very careful with the "Atkins" products. They really aren't legal for induction (even the ones that say ok for phase 1). Check out the ingredients.

Glad you are feeling better and good luck!

Re: Help! I'm Having A Blood Sugar Drop

congrats on getting through the atkins flu issues.

Your Dh needs to be espically careful with the Atkins products that contain SAs as many diabetics have discovered by use of their blood gluocse meters that SAs do effect blood sugars and they need to count anywhere from the full carb amount to 1/2 the amount so don't go by those net effect carb boxes you will find on the front of the box.

Glad your DH is meeting with his doc.
