  • 2 Days IN// 5lbs DOWN! :)

WOW! I was really skeptical about starting Atkins, as I was a total carb-a-holic, and worried about the tiredness and cravings people had warned me about. Today was the end of my second day, and I feel GREAT! I have lost 5lbs Going from 209 to 204! IM SOO EXCITED! No cravings, fought temptation at a restraunt and ordered healthy, and I'm really enjoying being creative with my food!

5lbs down, 71 more to go!

          What a great start, Meghan
And with such a positive attitude I am sure you will be successful on your Atkins journey
Did you take measurements before you started so you will have an extra way to judge your progress?
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Really no-one knows how much of the initial weightloss most new dieters experience is fat and how much is 'water-weight'
But after the first few days when your body has shed its excess water you will start to lose fat if you stay on plan, ecercise and drink your water .

The weight lost in the first days/week of Induction is mainly water weight. As your body is transitioning from glucosis to lipolysis, it burns through part of the available glycogen stores. Since glycogen is stored with a few parts water, as glycogen is "burned", you are losing the water stored with it.

The higher protein intake and some Induction vegetables also have a natural diuretic effect.

If you weren't drinking enough water pre-Atkins but are now, then the extra water will work against water retention, too.

In any case, any weight lost is weight lost... regardless of whether it's water or fat. And no one gets to goal losing only water.

In Chapter 9 of Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002), it says:

"Fallacy #3: The weight lost on the Atkins Nutritional Approach is mostly water, not fat.

Fact: It is typical of any weight loss plan, including the Induction phase of Atkins, that during the first few days, or even the first week, some of the weight loss will be water loss. However, when you follow a controlled carbohydrate eating plan, your body switches from burning carbohydrate to burning stored fat for energy, resulting in the loss of stored fat. In fact, research shows that even when water is lost during the first few days on a controlled carbohydrate nutritional approach, the water balance soon returns to normal, and the weight loss comes from burning body fat for energy. The most dramatic sign of this loss is seeing the inches drop off your measurements."
