  • Does plain tea raise insulin by itself?

I have been on induction for three weeks now as I feel I could be doing better with the weight loss. One thing I never gave up was tea. I drink it black no sugar, no milk, straight up.

I know dr atkins said he feels that caffine may induce hunger, but does plain tea actually raise insulin to keep you from attaining ketosis?

    Good question!

I had to look this one up.

This is a study that shows tea enhances insulin actitivity, meaning it makes insulin "work better": Tea enhances insulin activity. [J Agric Food Chem. 2002] - PubMed result

This is a link to something along the same lines but less technical: Insulin Mimickers in Black Tea Could Help Prevent Diabetes

This article says that green tea is able to increase insulin levels.Green Tea and Insulin Sensitivity - 15 Times More Effective

Sorry to be dense, but does that mean it impedes weight loss? I thought the reason Dr. Atkins suggest no caffeine was that it lowered blood sugar, it didn't impede weight loss. Just a question... Robin

insulin is a fat storeage hormone so anything that increases insulin levels will impede weight loss.

the reason caffeine lowers blood sugar is it increases insulin.

I also drink black tea and was wondering if switching to decaffinated black tea would be ok during induction? Thanks!

My husband's doctor says he is insulin resistant. He put him on Atkins to avoid taking insulin. Isn't this diet supposed to increase his insulin level? I am so confused. He is also supposed to lose weight on this diet. It seems contradictory.

the body secretes insulin in response to increases in blood glucose leves for ther majority of the releases.
folk who are insulin resistant have become desensitized to the insulin by their cells and they are not sucking that higher then normal glucose out of the blood stream at normal insulin levles so their body makes even more insulin to get the cells to react.

On Atkins the amount if blood glucose is kept at a steady normal low amount. the cells are primarily using fatty acids and ketones for their energy production. With the call for insulin being lessened by a high blood glucose level it is thought the cells will become resensitized to it much like our tastebuds become much more aware of sugar in our veggies after not being bombarded with sugar all day long in high carb foods.

Some folk also take medications like metaforin to assist their cells becoming more sensitized to insulin along with eating low carb.

One loses weight on atkins because it takes more energy to process the atkins food plan from mouth to energy then it does the USDA high carb food plan so we get more calories burned just eating the same cals total. then you add in the appetite suppression, the control of the cravings for sweets and the satisfaction the healthy fats and proteins give us and it is very natural to eat less total cals then one was eating before startign the atkins plan.

Add the mandatory exercise part of the plan and poof you get weight loss improved health and a happy DH and doc.
