Have used Atkins plan off and on for many years to lose weight. This time was determined to make it a permanent lifestyle. Was diagnosed with liver damage 5 years ago and my physician monitors this closely. Recent blood work shows drastic elevation in liver enzymes and he has told me to stop all supplements I take and also to come off Atkins Plan until I have more tests to discover why enzymes are so high. Am really upset because I have already lost 20 pounds on plan in just a few weeks and am very motivated to reach goal weight. Will do research on following Atkins plan if You have liver issues and post what I find out.

Re: Very Upset
I know you must be very disappointed. But you know what? It's also very important to learn what is causing your liver to go through-the-roof wacky.Originally posted by jaxkat View PostHave used Atkins plan off and on for many years to lose weight. Ask you doctor what kind of Diet he/she recommends for you at this point. In fact, bring in your book and ask him if Atkins Maintenance would be okay for you to pursue. At least if you are on Maintenance phase, you won't be gaining weight. So when you get the green light to continue with the weight loss phases, you won't be starting at a higher weight than you are now.
Good luck to you.

Re: Very Upset
I am currently on B/P meds---Enalapril & Amlodipine and med for high blood sugar..Metformin. Cause of liver damage is Hep C contracted while nursing some time in the past, but diagnosed just 5 years ago. According to docs, digesting too much protein causes stresses the liver causing more damage. Have researched this until I am almost crazy--and have decided to stay with Atkins.

Re: Very Upset
Also see if your doctor is generally anti Atkins, that may prejudice his decisions. There are more and more doctors coming around to the science behind this plan, you should be able to find on that can work with you, and respect your dietary lifestyle choice.Jim

Re: Very Upset
typically, you aren't eating too much protein on Atkins because Atkins is a high fat diet, not a high protein diet. In fact, you can think of Atkins as the opposite diet---keep your protein intake the same as your pre-Atkins way of eating, but decrease the amount of carbs and increase the amount of fat.Originally posted by jaxkat View PostI am currently on B/P meds---Enalapril & Amlodipine and med for high blood sugar..Metformin. Re: Very Upset
did you have blood work before you started atkins to see if the elevation happened during atkins?
if not were you eating lots of HFCS before you started? that can cause fatty liver to occur which can elevate liver enzymes too. if you were then atkins eating would help lower liver enzyme levles in the bloodby the book atkinseer
